Shaw echoes that SEC Commissioner Mike Slive and the SEC will ask the NCAA rules committee to look at reversing the 15-yard enforced penalty should the player not be ejected for targeting upon review.

"Even our commissioner has serious reservations about the penalty philosophy around targeting fouls when they’re overturned,” Shaw said on the SEC teleconference referring to Mike Slive. “He and I have talked. He’s challenged me, and together we’re going to work with the rules committee to revisit the penalty if a disqualification is overturned for targeting.”

Make it happen Slive. Make it happen.

Good. That is just stupid. And the targeting rule is responsible, IMO, for the jump in knee injuries this year. It's not a well-written rule.

Only in a bureaucratic meeting room would anyone think that its a good idea to keep a 15 yard penalty enforced when a foul never actually occurred; and is supported with video evidence that it never occurred. Simply mind boggling.

the ejection alone is retarded... throw in the "review" and it's quickly become the stupidest penalty in all of organized sports.

dumbest rule ever is the fumble out of bounds that the other teams is rewarded with the ball.

The targeting rule, I am fine with. The ejection part is over the top. The refs know this, so they can "overturn" the ejection. But the rule targeting or horse collar or face mask, etc. is called with no "video review" as to whether that flag should be reviewed. How many times do we see a "pass interference" call when the announcers will say "I didn't see much there to warrant that call."?

Agreed. At least the halo rule had a semi-justifiable reason behind it. This one is just flat-out windowlicking retarded.

I wouldn't have as much problem with the rule if the player remained in the game. I just don't think it right that one penalty in one game could potentially destroy a team's entire season.

The worst rule in college football is making an unrecovered fumble in your opponent's end zone a touchback

We've had two of these calls so far. IMO one was justified and the other was borderline at BEST. If it's borderline, why would they toss someone?

Seeing all these lower tackles is just as scary but I guess the concussion phobia is too strong.

Why can't they just develop a helmet that works better?

So what should happen in that situation?

Don't fumble then. But some people would rather cry.

Take it back to the spot of the fumble- isn't that what happens when the ball rolls out of bounds normally?

It's the most punitive rule in the game

I say fine the school like they do players in the NFL. It will make the coaches instill the importance of not leading with their helmet. If they keep on, then the coaches and school can make the decisions on whether or not to sit the player. Believe me, 2 or 3 $10,000 dollar fines would not sit well.

Nope... unless it is kicked by a player, purposely advancing before rolling out of bounds.

Either the REC or the SEC will get this worked out.

All kinds of reasons. Companies don't have much of an incentive to do so (the NOCSAE has some pretty archaic guidelines) and it's difficult to pinpoint a change that would be uniform to everyone.

MIPS is an interesting concept because it reduces rotational forces (what makes it so hard to build a good helmet) by having basically a "fitted" cap inside the helmet that stays static with the players head while the "helmet" itself will slide/have enough give to keep things from "rotating".

It's interesting stuff, but in the easy way out for the NCAA is to make shitty rules.
