This is a nice thing to look at the end of Sept but let's revisit this at the end of October. Conference play will be in full swing and then compare things.
For Mississippi State: A&M, ARK, KY and Bama make up the Oct slate of games. let's see if they remain near the top after this next stretch.

Pretty surprised to see LSU at #6 is basically all of those metrics, particularly on offense. Figured they'd be much lower

Where are you getting your numbers from? cfbstats.com has different ones. Not saying either one is wrong or right.

Those include garbage time (2nd qtr margin > 36, 3rd qtr margin > 26, 4th qtr margin > 20) and games vs FCS opponents.

His numbers take out plays after the games are out of hand, like Alabama's 4th quarter (and probably 3rd) against Vandy, for example. He's posted before the actual mechanics on how he determines garbage time.

It’ll be interesting to see how it goes against a pretty good run offense in Arkansas, but the Bama run D has been incredible so far.
I think they are giving up something like 42% of opponents run averages YTD.
The other story there in the data is that UGA has an incredibly efficient offense so far. Hitting 81% of available yards is off the charts good.

It feels weird seeing UGA with the best offense and Ole Miss with the best points per drive on defense.

It's also a bit crazy that UGA had pretty much 0 time against Kent State that qualifies as garbage time. That game accounts for 22 of the 32 points you've given up all year.
It doesn't help that Samford (being FCS) accounts for 100% garbage time and doesn't help the model at all for Georgia (which hurts your defense but, oddly enough, helps your offense as that was your lowest scoring output all year).
Georgia has definitely appeared to have a motivation issue when playing lesser opponents (lackluster on offense against Samford, lackluster on both sides against Kent State).

Been that way for years. We barely beat Nichols State Kirby’s first year. Played down to USCe a couple of times and F’d around and found out once.
