Steve Shaw-
quote:

For the hurry-up to work without delay, coaches need officiating crews to keep up with the quickening pace while also playing within the rules. Human error is always a concern and some umpires are more athletic than others, Shaw said, and "what we're trying to do is get our whole staff to be consistent" and not hover over the ball once it is set.

It just sounds like to me they are trying to aid certain teams that use this style. Does everyone really want all teams to have to move to this to keep up.

8 officials? That could get expensive. Better hold a fundraiser Gumps and Barners!

Cheaper method would have been to buy the first 7 refs glasses so they don't frick the calls up. Hiring more helen kellers to referee isn't going to fix anything.

I know adding a extra ref would help a hurry-up offense run better, wihtout breaking any rules.

But if you're gonna change the rules on how many refs are out there, then maybe they should change some other rules that allow the D to sub more.

Dont change something thats only gonna help one side of the ball.

If they do this to help HUNH offenses they should add 5 to 10 seconds to the play clock so Pro style offenses can slow the game down a little if they choose to.

But they aren't actually changing the rules to help anyone, just adding the number of people that are supposed to enforce the current rules.

So adding another ref is not changing the rules. Im sure somewhere in the rule book, it says, each game must have 7 refs. That is what they are trying to change.

changing from 7 refs to 8 refs, is a change to the rules.

Not always.

This is true.

The rule says games are to be officiated by 4, 5, 6, or 7 officials.

Just stating the rule. No big deal, IMO, if they change it to add another official or two to help them better do their jobs.

If they can make changes to help aid a certain style of play, then they can make changes to help the other side of the ball or like Big Daddy said, give the pro style offenses more clock to drain.

Thats all im saying.

Either way, only time will tell.

I mean, what college football fan isn't familiar with Rule 11, Section 2, Article 1?

I was shocked you didn't know it, to be honest.
