Believe what you want, our defense didn't take a step back last year, even though we replaced our DC and two first round draft picks

We gave up some meaningless touchdowns late in multiple games getting some younger guys experience and the game we gave up the most points-UF, 44- UF had drives of 1, 3 and 19 yards.

Stay delusional while you can though. It'll be pretty tough once UGA starts 0-2 in the SEC, although I'm sure UGA has some fans that will point out the reality of the situtation.

These threads really remind me that UGA doesn't consider us a rival, and we start TONS of threads insulting UGA.

I can see how new UGA fans think USC is a rival over Tenn. I rank them

Florida
Tech
Tenn
USC

I don't really HATE auburn that much. A lot oft family went there and I know they are a big rival for UGA but not me personally.

Over the course of your entire conference schedule, you gave up 5 more ppg and about 40 more yards or game.

I love how you try to deflect that as junk.

You took a step backwards last season.
It wasnt huge. and it might not be a sign of trouble to come without ellis johnson.

Then again, if it continues for a second year in a row... will gamecock fans notice or be concerned? ot will it be racked up as junk points allowed?
So far, it comes off as fans keeping their head in the sand.

S.Car gave up 302 ypg in conference in 2012.

How confident are you that you are going to rebound in 2013?
How well did you think of Ellis Johnson when he was on the sidelines?
Any chance that this isn't a blip. It isn't a coincidence?

Last season we had essentially an entirely new secondary minus one player D.J. Swearinger. Both CBs and the SS were new starters. We played against 3 of the top 4 passing offenses in the SEC last season, plus Clemson and UAB (both top 20 pass Os last season) and ECU was in the top 40. That's 6 of our 12 regular season opponents with top-40 passing offenses going against our young secondary, and we finished with the 21st-ranked passing D.

Next season only Swearinger will be gone, but those 3 other DBs will return with a full season of experience and starts. That's not the same as saying "we're much better now that our experienced 1st-rd draft picks have left and we're replacing them with lesser-experienced, younger players". I don't know how one can post such a thing and not see how foolish it sounds...

We allowed 3 turnovers in the early going versus UF that basically gave them 21 quick points, and led the way to a 44-11 win for them. USC averaged 16.9 ppg versus the SEC in '11, not 16 ppg, and minus that UF game last season we allowed 17.9 ppg versus the other 7 SEC opponents (minus our gm UF averaged scoring 23.3 ppg vs their other 7 SEC foes). Considering what we went up against with the passing offenses, that wasn't too bad. We don't expect having another UF gm like that again...

UGA allowed 247.9 ypg of total O vs SEC opponents in '11, and allowed 350.8 ypg last season with all of their stars.

Any chance that this isn't a blip. It isn't a coincidence?

My bad. Thanks for the pick me up on that.

Yup. Freshman QB and new defense.
That rebuilding year was worth it, though.

4th year starter at QB coming back.
And we now have a defense that was recruited for this scheme.

OH MY GOD! Grantham has been at UGA for THREE FRICKING SEASONS and FOUR (4) FRICKING RECRUITING CLASSES!!!!! It takes him THIS LONG to figure out what he wants to man his scheme with?? UGA fans should be VERY concerned with the direction TG is taking their defense.....

There is no "direction" issue with grantham's defense. He has had essentially 3 recruiting classes. And this is their first year as upperclassmen. no surprise that the majority of them were behind on the depth chart until this season.

Now, grantham has to produce with his own guys. it's never as easy as it looks. should make for an interesting watch over the course of the seasn.

Remember that we went from a 4-3 to a 3-4. and the majority of guys that left this past offseason were brought in by the prior regime for the prior scheme.

Im not concerned about yards per game. those stats are insignificant behind wins and losses or points per game allowed.

However, we did lose a lot of gamechanging players. and that does worry me. Will we generate enough pressure on the qb? will we generate turnovers? will we have guys step up and make big 4th down and 3rd down stops? will our 2 new safeties give up cheap points?

Im concerned about all of those questions.
We lost 2 players off our amazing 2007 defense. and in 2008, we didnt have an identity. no one stepped up and carried the defense with big plays.
That is my concern for 2013. i dont give 2 squirts about yards per game if we cant keep opponents out of the endzone.

Jarvis Jones left UGA after his jr. season...he first went to SoCal, but transferred to UGA in 2010 after Grantham was already there to play in Grantham's 3-4....

Ogletree: recruited as part of Grantham's 2010 class...Garner was his primary recruiter, but TG surely had final say on him, as though he was rated as a DB he was recruited for LB at UGA...

John Jenkins: JUCO transfer recruited into the TG defense as a prototype NT...

Shawn Williams: as SS, wasn't part of the front 7...

Sanders Commings: as CB, wasn't part of the front 7...

Cornelius Washington: perhaps the argument could be made that Washington was recruited for the 4-3 as opposed to the 3-4 since he pre-dated TG, but one should also note that:

2011: 12 gms/6 strts - 17 tckls, 6.0 TFL, 5.0 sacks, 29 QBPs
2012: 14 gms/10 strts - 22 tckls, 3.0 TFL, 0.5 sacks, 15 QBPs

Washington's production took a noticeable downturn in his final season, despite playing and starting in more games. Was this a result in a bad scheme fit, or did he just not develop throughout his career at UGA?. The backfield numbers his '11 season (TFL, sacks, QBPs) were quite impressive and had him set for a dominant senior season, but it didn't happen...

Bacarri Rambo: as CB, wasn't part of the front 7...howver, one could argue that his season in 2010 (Grantham's first year at UGA) was his best year overall, as most of his stats declined in '11 and '12....

Kwame Geathers: pre-dated TG, but was recruited by UGA as an interior DT as opposed to OL like USC recruited him for, and he preferred the DL over the OL. He was never some DT converted into a DE, or DE converted into a LB. He wasn't some 290-300-lb DT being force-fed into a 350-lb NT (he was around 330 out of HS). He always had the body type to play the interior of a 3-4 scheme, and I highly doubt he had issues with fitting into the scheme...

Have I left anyone out? I'm sorry, I just don't see anything here except weak excuses. And besides, how does a defense that most UGA fans on this site were proclaiming as contenders for the top D in the SEC for 2012 this point a year ago, go to saying that that SAME D was full of poor-executing, out of place misfits? In just one season?

After that, how should we take UGA fans now proclaiming UGA's offense as being contenders for SEC top O? Seems dubious....

LOL.

Way to put a lot of words together that don't say anything.

You're right. Jarvis Jones (transfer) and John Jenkins (transfer) were brought in by Todd Grantham. Jarvis was an ILB. Grantham converted him to OLB in his 2nd season.

However, Ogletree was recruited as a safety and committed about a year and a half before Grantham was hired. Grantham converted him to ILB in his 2nd seasons.

Guys that weren't recruited by Grantham...
Alec Ogletree committed in 2008.
Shawn Williams committed in 2008.
Sanders Commings committed in 2007.
Branden Smith committed in 2007.
Mike Gilliard committed in 2008.
Christian Robinson committed in 2007.
Abry Jones committed in 2008.
Kwame Geathers committed in 2009.
Bacarri Rambo committed in 2007.
Cornelius Washington committed in 2006.

Grantham's guys have been underclassmen.
He was hired January 15th, 2010.
2013 will be the first year for his boys to be upper-classmen and to lead the defense.

I'm not certain why that's a shock to someone who follows football that it takes a few years for someone's own recruits to step up.
