I don't care how you calculate it, resume, SOR, whatever, there are not 31 better teams than Auburn. We are far enough into the season where these rankings should be matching the eyeball test.

For that matter, there are not 26 better teams than UK.

Something about the Big10 early season blowouts has done something to skew the projection models in a way that over rates some of the teams in the conference. It shows up most tellingly in kenpom rankings. I also think he modified his formula where recency doesn't factor in and it weighs November games the same as February and March games.

I see the frustration point but getting mad at KenPom is like getting mad at Nate Silver. The stats are stats.

Agreed, but it may be evidence of a flaw or needed tweak in his formula. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out and if he thinks a team is needed. It may just be an anomaly.

Absolutely, but if he was able to fix that flaw, he’d be Warren Buffett’s bracket winner every year

Yep - to be fair, they won a lot of big OOC games spread across the league
- MSU beat Seton Hall
- Maryland beat Marquette
- Ohio State beat Cincinnati, Villanova, Kentucky
- Iowa beat Texas Tech, Cincinnati
- Purdue beat VCU, Virginia
- Michigan beat Creighton, Gonzaga
- Wisconsin beat Marquette
- Rutgers beat Seton Hall

So they won a bunch of Top 30ish OOC games spread across 10 teams and didn't have all that many terrible losses - then when they start playing each-other they just spread the wealth.

Minnesota, who is thoroughly average, being ranked ahead of Auburn is ridiculous. I don't care how "inefficient" Auburn is. I mean, we played @ Penn State right before Christmas. They are a really good basketball team, but they aren't any better than Auburn or Kentucky.

Yea - which is pretty silly, especially considering how much college basketball teams change and ferment or fall apart as the season progresses (both good and bad).

The last time the SEC was rated this low (2014), UF, Tennessee, and UK reached the Elite 8, and UF and UK made it to the Final 4.

Yep - very true. Difference was, 2014 had some really good teams and a bunch of terrible teams as opposed to 2020 which has some good teams and a bunch of above average ones.

2014
3. Florida
10. Tennessee
13. Kentucky
44. Arkansas
59. LSU
69. Missouri
78. Georgia
83. Ole Miss
86. Alabama
109. Vanderbilt
110. Texas A&M
112. South Carolina
122. Auburn
205. Mississippi St

League had 3 Top 13 teams but only 4 Top 50 teams.

This year the league has 0 Top 25 teams but 7 Top 50 teams.

The league sucks badly, even in a very down year for the sport. I would take an even money bet on under 1.5 teams making the second weekend.

I don't think Auburn is truly the 32nd best team in the country, but it does kind of make sense where it is coming from

- Auburn has played 5 OT games and is 5-0 in them
- Auburn has played 10 games with 6 pt margins or less and is 10-0 in them
- Auburn's 2 losses were by an average of 21 pts

Auburn Vs KenPom Top 75 Opponents
- Record : 10-2
- Average Score : Auburn 77.5 - Opponents 75.2 (+2.3 margin)

Alabama Vs KenPom Top 75 Opponents
Record : 4-8
Average Score : Alabama 81.0 - Opponents 80.5 (+0.5 margin)

The computer just sees those types of numbers and says...........this doesn't make sense.

Nah, there isn't an "Elite" team this year. SEC could very easily get 0 or get all 4 teams to the Sweet 16. Its a crapshoot.

Not that mind boggling when you look at Auburn’s efficiency numbers.

Of the 3 best teams in the league, one lost to Evansville and Utah and cannot score the ball from 3 at all.

One of them is one of the worst defensive teams ever to be in contention for a P6 league title and has a near double digit loss to Vandy.

One doesn’t have a top 25 offense or a top 50 defense and is pushing towards being one of the biggest pyth W/L overperformers in KP history.

KenPom is just a reminder why stats really don't mean a ton.

Auburn can beat any team in the country and could lose to over 60 teams on any give night. We are what we are and we will just keep playing.
