If I had Sankey’s ear, I would recommend a pod less system with 5 permanent opponents for everyone while the other 10 rotate in.

If we went to a 10-game schedule, it would be easy. 5 permanent and the other 10 rotate in every 2 years.

If it’s a 9-game schedule, then it would just take 1 year longer to okay everyone home and away:
Y1: 1, 2, 3, 4
Y2: 3, 4, 5, 6
Y3: 5, 6, 7, 8
Y4: 7, 8, 9, 10
At this point you’ve played everyone but haven’t visited 2 stadiums
Y5: 9, 10, 1, 2

This would allow to maintain and build rivalries on an annual basis.

One of the early missteps of the Big 12 was relegating OU vs Nebraska to twice every 4 years.

Now, once every five years we can assess the top 8 teams vs the bottom 8 teams for the previous 5 years. Suppose if done today it would be top 8:

Bama
Lsu
Florida
Georgia
Auburn
Oklahoma
A&M
Texas

If you’re in the top 8, your permanents are 3 tops 8s and 2 bottom 8s and vice versa. The schedules would balance because of the 4 or 5 rotating in.

For sake of argument, LSU’s 5 could be

Bama
A&M
Ole Miss
Miss State
Florida

A&M’s 5 -
Texas
LSU
Arkansas
Oklahoma
Mizzou or MSST? Don’t care about this 5th spot much.

Works with me I guess.

I have been pushing this idea for a week.. and it works with or without pods.. it really is a great solution to play all the rivalry games.

5 Perm + 4 Rotating = 9 Games & 5 year cycle
5 Perm + 5 Rotating = 10 Games & 4 year cycle

(3 Pod + 2 Perm) + 4/5 Rotating = Same as above

It makes a lot of sense to me. Good balance between seeing everyone and building rivalries

You'd have to find a way to keep the schedule balanced, though, especially since the top two records in the league would go to the SEC Championship Game if there were no divisions.

You can't have Alabama's permanent opponents be Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma.

If you go to a 10game schedule than you keep divisions move Bama/Aub to East Mizzou and OU/Texas to the west and have 3 rotating OC games with no permanent OC games.

If done like that, a player will play all SEC teams in a 4 year stretch.

I think they'd still keep a permanent opponent cross division under this scenario.

Here’s one idea as to permanent opponents under this system.

Team Perm 1 Perm 2 Perm 3 Perm 4 Perm 5
Alabama Auburn Tennessee Oklahoma Miss. State LSU
Auburn Alabama Georgia Florida Arkansas Missouri
Arkansas Missouri South Caro Auburn Texas Texas A&M
Florida Georgia Kentucky Auburn LSU Tennessee
Georgia Florida Auburn Texas South Caro Kentucky
Kentucky South Caro Vanderbilt Tennessee Florida Georgia
LSU Ole Miss Miss. State Texas A&M Florida Alabama
Miss. St Ole Miss LSU Texas Alabama Vanderbilt
Missouri Arkansas South Caro Ole Miss Oklahoma Auburn
Oklahom Texas Texas A&M Alabama Missouri Vanderbilt
Ole Miss Miss. State LSU Vanderbilt Missouri Tennessee
S Caro Kentucky Arkansas Missouri Texas A&M Georgia
Tenn Vanderbilt Alabama Kentucky Florida Ole Miss
Texas Texas A&M Oklahoma Georgia Arkansas Miss. State
Tex A&M Texas Oklahoma LSU South Caro Arkansas
Vandy Tennessee Kentucky Ole Miss Miss. State Oklahoma

For all of these division less proposals have you considered the downside of:

A- an end of season rematch (ie Bama and Auburn playing 2 weeks in a row)

B- 2 teams from same side of Conference playing far from home (OU vs aTm in Atlanta, Bama vs Florida in Dallas)

Divisions let you wrap up cross division games in October and guarantee a balanced geography

We get 5 teams and doesn't include Arkansas ?

These are two perceived downsides for sure.

But I believe the ability to build rivalries throughout the conference and the ability to see all teams within the conference outweighs these concerns, which will be very rare.

Hope not.
I’m already tired of A&M’s proposed schedule looking like a B12 redux.
There’s a reason we left that place.

I’m certain A&M would play LSU Texas and Arkansas.

I think Oklahoma is a good fit regionally and historically.

Remember though, there are 9 games in this model, so every year the teams that rotate in will be mostly eastern teams.

Because playing South Carolina every year makes so much sense

Doesn’t have to make sense.
It’s fun.
They’re great fans.
It’s different.

This whole expansion thing stopped making “sense” long ago.

It’s very easy to nitpick one particular set of opponents. Remember that the schedule must be made for as 16 teams, however. Everyone must be accommodated, so in some cases an individual program may not get “what they desire”.

10 conference games is too many

UF and UGA have a neutral site game AND a permeant OOC game, math doesn't work for enough home games

3 perm and 6/12 rotating is a nice 9 game schedule

This is what I came up with for 3 permanent opponents for each team

UK: Tenn, Vand, Mizz

LSU: aTm, UF, OM

OU: Tex, Mizz, Ark

Tex: OU aTm, Ark

aTm: Tex, LSU, OM

Bama: Aub, Ten, MSU

AUB: Bama, UGA, MSU

Ten: Bama, Vandy, Kent

UGA: AUB, UF, USC

UF: UGA, LSU, USC

OM: MSU, LSU , aTm

MSU: OM, AUB, Bama

ARKY: Miz, OU, UT

Vandy: Tenn, USC, Kent

USC: UGA, UF, Vandy

Mizz: Arky, OU, Kent
