But his biggest accomplishment absolutely has to be fielding a team with only 38 players, for an entire season.

There are many who insist that feat would be impossible, for only a single game.

Here's to the Junction Boys

Junction boys is a made up story to deflect from the fact that no one wants to play for A&M unless they’re getting paid

He was truly an exceptional coach- got the most out of every player. To be fair that story would have been rather ordinary at most SEC schools. The fact that he accomplished that at A&M, which as a program across the board is known to always quite at the first sign of adversity, is truly remarkable.

They did have a bunch of sissy boys on that team and Bear had to weed them out.

Little know side story, the yell leaders grew by a similar number of those that left the junction camp.

Junction was about weeding out all the FAGGS. Big problem in College Station that persists to this day.

Yeah - great story about running everyone off and going 1-9 the subsequent season. That’s some great coaching for sure!

But he was a wife-beating drunk who wrote the book on cheating and claiming fake championships.

Fixed that for you.

State played @ UGA in 2020 with 44 players and lost 31-24 with the game tied in the 4th quarter and remaining in doubt until right at the end.
But yes, it would be difficult to sustain an entire season with that small of a roster.

Interesting that some posters want to impugn a man based on what may have happened during his lifetime. May be he did some of things he his accused of. But it is a bit hard to determine 40 years after his death.

Plus others like to judge other’s actions of their day based on standards that exist today. Leaves me shaking my head.

Bear Bryant was a man of his times. If you are going to "impugn" him for what he did you might as well go ahead and "impugn" your own great granddaddy.

Also A&M went 7-2 the next year and 9-0-1 the 3rd year

And then going 7-2-1 and 9-0-1 over the next two seasons. A&M was #1 and undefeated in 1957 when it was announced he was leaving College Station for Tuscaloosa. Had that not happened, he likely wins a national championship at Texas A&M.

A&M just needs the right coach. They could be right up there with LSU and Florida in the SEC if they get that.

My Uncle Sid Theriot (No relation just friend of the family) passed away last year. He was upset when they made the
ESPN movie because he thought Brad Pitt should have played him but they used amalgams.

He was a drunk but he did not care about fake championships. The SEC was the one that meant something to him. And as badly as he treated those Junction Boys the ones who survived respected him to the end. They almost all led very successful lives and often credited lessons learned while surviving the junction.

That was when they played games with thirty-eight players.

Only team that does that is LSU, these days.

Others just cancel.

Well if all your star players would actually play and not opt out during their sophomore years you might field a team that doesn’t get their shite kicked in
