Former Patriots exec Mike Lombardi, in the latest episode of his podcast titled "GM Shuffle", explained the New Orleans Saints' effort to trade up.
"New Orleans was trying to get into the top 10 to get a cornerback, there's no doubt," Lombardi said. "I think it was (Jaycee) Horn. They tried, but they couldn't get in there, they were too far back to get in the top 10.

"But, and I've had this confirmed to me by two teams, they were trying to get up above New England to get Mac Jones. I don't think there's any doubt about that. Everybody will deny it. I'm just telling you. They couldn't get there. Why? Because Minnesota traded with the Jets (to No. 14) and Minnesota didn't go back as far as New Orleans, and (the Vikings) got a good deal. No. 13 wasn't moving because (Rashawn) Slater was there, and the Chargers weren't going to move. No. 12 wasn't moving because Dallas was going to take (Micah) Parsons. No. 11 became (Justin) Fields. So, there was nowhere for (the Saints) to go. I don't know if the Saints called New England to try to trade for that pick or if they knew New England was going to just take Mac Jones."

This isn't the first time Sean Payton has tried to trade up in the first round to nab a quarterback, the team infamously tried to trade ahead of Kansas City to pick Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft.

JMO but Mac would have found throwing the ball indoors at the Dome much more friendly than winters in Boston. Even Tom made the statement that he wasn't playing for anymore cold weather teams.

New Orleans would've been a better situation for Mac all the way around but New England isn't bad.

Glad he didnt go to N.O.
He has a better shot of living in Boston than getting shot, robbed or killed in the third world country N.O. has become.

Shame. The mental gymnastics on display here would have been gold medal worthy.

Hope not, the Saints will not win many games with him as QB.

That’s bull crap. The mayor wants a super bowl winning caliber Qb that can throw the ball down field while playing in a very hostile environment (NEW ORLEANS SUPER DOME). I doubt Mac Jones has any of those capabilities.

I think it would have worked out great for Mac since Louisinan offers 24/7 liquor sales and drive through Daiquiri places. We all know that Mac just loves to take down his cold ones while behind the wheel.
