Nearly one-fifth of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors believe there is at least a 50 percent chance a full college football season won’t be played this fall because of the impact of COVID-19.

And if there is no college football, a majority of the 130 FBS athletic directors predict dire consequences for the sport.

“There better be (a season) or many programs will be out of business,” an athletic director said.

“Quite simply,” added another AD, “it would be devastating.”

Another AD was more direct: “If there’s no season, we will be f*****.”

Without the millions of dollars of revenue generated by college football programs (media rights, ticket sales, sponsorships, donations, etc.), some ADs fear there would be incredible consequences, including schools having to cut or eliminate Olympic/non-revenue sports.

I would imagine that football season is a big part of what funds having other sports that don’t bring in a lot of revenue.

Many SEC athletic departments have become bloated, including Auburn’s. There is room to save money and most should have some reserves if they were smart.

If no sports are played next season, then most of the expenses should just be paying for scholarships (which they should all have a slush fund for given how much revenue they take in every year). Paying coaches will be based on other revenues, so that’ll be up to the boosters. No sports = low expenses. We would be fine.

I would say more like a 90% chance of no football.

This thing is just starting and they have to have a vaccine before you can knowing allow 25k-50k-100k people in a gigantic bowl of virus and bacteria with in adequate sanitization.

I think the season will be played. Might have to be pushed back a little, but they'll play.

for big schools, yes.

but for more than half of FBS, and probably almost all of lower divisions, those athletics would be in trouble

Maybe its time for those people who aren't aware that football and basketball fund everything else to come to an understanding.

Greene has already culled away repetitive or insignificant jobs. He also implemented 10% budget cuts last spring. I still don’t think the reserves will save Auburn if we don’t have football. Too soon to tell though.

This....they also may not play in front of 85-100K people but there will be some people in the stadium but most importantly TV deals will be honored and paid off.

I've never understood why every little college in America has to have a football team. Some contraction and fewer games against FCS teams might be a good thing.

College professors at big schools will finally see just how important football is.

I was responding for the SEC. With all the TV revenue we have been getting, some AD’s have started spending more on staff and facilities.

I think almost every athletic budget relies on football. shite even schools like duke and UNC rely on that to bolster everything but basketball. shite I even think Kansas football was important to their athletic budget.

Yeah if not football revenue comes in, a lot of schools are fricked

Yea, that doesn't even begin to include the total cost of a major athletic department. SEC athletic departments will be unable to meet cash payment obligations on a multitude of things (from debt service to power bills to payroll) if they don't receive football ticket payments and conference payouts. It is literally their revenue structure.

They'll figure something out, because they pretty much have to, but it would be apocalyptic in economic scope.

yup, no football would be catastrophic to a lot of the smaller programs.
