Nick Saban admits to being a little surprised learning he’d been elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

After all, in some quarters of the Bayou State, Saban is considered Public Enemy No. 1 for the way his Alabama football teams have dominated LSU of late.

But 20 years after taking over a struggling LSU program and not just turning it into a national champion but establishing the foundation for the Tigers’ continuing success two decades later, Saban is headed for Natchitoches, the home of the hall, and induction next June.

“I’m thrilled and honored,” Saban said. “It is a privilege to be joining so many great people in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, especially because of the great relationships we built there."

Nick Saban transformed the entire sports culture in Louisiana and especially at LSU,” Doug Ireland, the Hall of Fame’s chairman said. “What took place in his five seasons at LSU was fundamental change that started the greatest, by far, sustained run of success for a traditional-steeped football program.

“His influence has proven immense.”

Saban said he is looking forward to being in Natchitoches for the induction weekend.

“I’ll be there,” he said. “Our time in Louisiana was very special, and again, I am tremendously honored.”

Terrible timing. They should have waited until he retired from Bama.

Do they have a wing just for championship coaches that wanted to coach somewhere else?

Too soon. Such a dumbass move.

I agree he should be in but you shouldn’t put the sitting Alabama head coach in the Louisiana hall of fame. Stupid.

Will probably die in the saddle, at this point you don't take chances.

Meh.

If LSU beats Bama this fall and runs the table, the timing will be terrific.

If the opposite happens, sure. I'll be an optimist and say this is LSU's year to shine.

But I think the real reason for this is that Miles was inducted earlier this year and that made it glaringly obvious that Saban was long overdue to be inducted. Kudos to the Hall for recognizing his contributions to LSU and the state.

Touché, but there is always a “Mama called” exception.

Doesn’t apply with Les and Nick.

ETA: Plus, he didn’t win a championship at A&M before he left. He did, however, wear his Junction Boys ring until he died.

Well Les was fired and Saban didnt leave LSU to go to Alabama, he left to go to the NFL, that is an understandable move.

Yeah we’re basing it off of the Bear Bryant one at A&M.

Except ours actually has a national title trophy.

I can't wait to hear the LSU fans belittling (no pun intended) him now that they've voted him into their Sports Hall of Fame.

They inducted Miles BEFORE Saban? That's hilarious.

Saban dragging his nuts all over Louisiana.

At this point Louisiana has accepted that Saban cucked them.
