It would be a PR nightmare for any school to take that step.

And then the player goes to the local media with the name of Joe Booster who bought him the Tahoe that he's been driving for 3 years and tells them that "this guy is gonna pay back my tuition"

good luck with that

I think if a player wants to sit out bowl game then no biggie. Player shouldn't travel with team or get to participate in any bowl activities. Backups get some practice time at the 1, get game experience, and exposure on TV. No real downside.

That’s a valid point and probably the reason for the schools allowing it. Would hurt recruiting as well.

Easy to say when your team is playing in meaningful games every year... that being said if your team plays for one another those players might play. Id say it has a lot to do with locker-room culture.

I played college athletics. When I signed my scholarship, the paperwork actually states that if you willfully disobey a coach or don’t perform up to reasonable standards (such as participate in practice or games when asked to do so), that you have to pay back your scholarship.
Not saying you're wrong, but do you have a link to that rule?

There are a lot of college athletes that quit playing sports or drop out of college. Maybe they have to pay out that semester, but I can't see them having to pay it all back.

This has always been my line of thought. People always complain that it’s not up to the public what the athlete chooses to do, which is fair, but it’s just sad to me that a teammate would abandon his team in what is most likely extremely important to the 70-80% of the team that aren’t going on to the NFL. They will go into the next stage of life having those bowl games as their highest moments and you want to put them in a position to lose after they spent their career making you look good enough to go in the draft.

Technically they aren't supposed to be let out of their LOI, but we know that happens.

At the least you require them to pay back the scholarship they were given. That’s a start. It’s most likely pocket change for the ones that do decide to sit out because they’ll soon be the ones drafted, but the schools should still charge them for it. If a student that is going to school on scholarship for academic reasons has their gpa drop below a certain level or decide to not go to class the scholarship is removed. Same standard should be applied to athletics

This is idiotic. You remove a scholarship for a kid whos GPA drops. You don't retroactively charge them for scholarship dollars already awarded. Bet your arse if you tried to charge my kid for scholarship dollars already awarded, I'd sue for unearned wages and for the millions the schools made from his hard work.

The most selfish thing for a kid who has multiple people counting on a guaranteed seven figure check if he just stays healthy is to play a game he doesn't need to play. They should sit out.

Also, this is an opportunity for the kids sitting lower in the depth chart, it's an opportunity for the coaching staff, and it's an opportunity for the fans to find some players to look forward to seeing next year. It doesn't need to be a bad thing.

My scholarship papers are somewhere around my house. I will look and see if I can find them and post a picture of that section.

I get an injured guy missing a bowl. I get a guy missing the Liberty Bowl. I lt will happen soon when a healthy guy skips a CFP game to focus on the draft. THAT is when it will hit get real

Thats why I watch some directional bowl. To see other players get reps. Same reason I watch A day games. I honestly coupd care less if AU wins the game.

RIP to the career of the first coach that chooses this option.

And if that guy was forced to play do you think he would give full effort?

It would be a terrible distraction and cause issues in locker room. That player would be trouble. The players on the team would want that guy to be removed and as far away from them and their bowl preparation/experience as possible.

If I'm an NFL GM do I seriously wanna draft a guy who quits on his team before a bowl game & if they eventually begin sitting out playoff games that shows lack of character, dedication & heart.

Yes, assuming they can help my team win.

I can motivate them with money and employment in the pros.

This is still tricky where you have guys with knocks that they could normally play through but decide is too much to risk further injury in a bowl. It could easily become a PR nightmare for that school if Star Player X is told he will not be allowed to enjoy any of the bowl experience then posts on social media about having his ankle wrapped in ice or whatnot.

Also, to all the idiots asking for the scholarship to have to be repaid, they aren't even in class for these bowls. The fall semester has been completed. Even if they immediately yank the scholarship, it would just mean the kid doesn't have one for the spring. You cannot retroactively pull the scholarship funding for past semesters. That would definitely be illegal.

You ask the player "Do you want to play?"

If he says yes then play him

If he says no then leave him at home to focus on "rehab/recovery" for his upcoming NFL career

Combine and draft workouts are pretty close to the end of the college season
