In yesterday's news conference, Saban made the statement that he does not get involved in politics and never has but then goes on a spill about the importance of voter registration. Is that not dealing with politics? Also, didn't he recently lead a BLM march, which is a very political and controversial organization with a clear agenda! Ole Nicky will do anything to get recruits! You're right Nicky, you don't get involved in politics! He's a piece of work!

That's why he's the best coach in college football history.

By “politics” he could have strictly meant campaigning and/or fundraising for politicians.

But I’m sure you knew that.

Kind of. Not really. Really civics more than anything.

Too bad Skyking can't contribute anymore to these discussions.

Or he may just simply see it as the right thing to do.

That's a good point but also disturbing in a way.

Telling people to register to vote is only political if you try to convince people who they should vote for.

Well he made a political endorsement in the 2018 mid-terms in WV. Does that count?

Also made a campaign donation

I can tell you, we’re not endorsing any candidates. I’ve never endorsed a candidate, nor will I ever endorse a candidate or get involved in politics in any way shape or form. I don’t think that’s my place”

This sounds like a lie to me

I don’t really see a problem with it either but some may think it implies that change is needed i.e. “we wouldn’t be in this position if more people voted last time, so register to vote”

Not my way of thinking necessarily but can come off that way.

He went to high school with Joe Manchin.

And to be fair, it didn’t come off as some emphatic endorsement as much as speaking on Manchin’s character.

quote:

West Virginia is Saban’s home state and Joe Manchin is Saban’s childhood friend.

“He never forgets where he came from,” Saban says in the ad’s opening line. “I don’t have a better friend or know a better person than Joe Manchin.”

The political spot isn’t meant for consumption in Alabama where a local endorsement by the coach could potentially cause friction with his fanbase.

The ad makes no mention of Saban’s association with the University of Alabama, showing only his name, birth year and home city. Further, Saban doesn’t sneak in any crimson and white, opting instead for a green shirt. And you don’t even get to see the glitzy trophies in the background of his segment.

Great, but when he’s literally on a campaign ad commercial endorsing a guy two years ago, then says yesterday he’s never endorsed a political candidate, that is an untrue statement. His relationship to the guy is irrelevant.

My guess is that, in as far he cares, Saban is a fairly moderate Democrat; like most guys his age from the coal/rust belt. Unions were very important there and almost always backed Dems. Otoh in 2016, Trump did well there

He said he's never endorsed a candidate.

It was certainly implied that he was referring to presidential candidates, which he has always held close to the vest. And that he doesn't try to influence his player's or fans decisions when he encourages them to register to vote, which was the whole point of the statement anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with it other than the hypocritical issue but that's not new. We all remember "I'm not gonna be the head coach at Alabama" rant. No one should be surprised he lies. It's why he's such a good recruiter. They all lie.
As for the original topic, he's a citizen of the United States and of course has politics ties and thoughts. We shouldn't begrudge him for that. It's not my place to tell him who to vote for or to endorse. I don't want him telling me who to vote for either. The man is human after all
