Saban: CFB Playoff has killed bowl games

Saban joined Bryant McFadden and Patrick Petersen on the "All Things Covered" podcast this week to discuss the future of the college football postseason.
"I've always been one that bowl games and playoffs are going to have a tough time coexisting together," he said. "Bowl games have always been a positive thing for college football players because a lot of people get a lot of self-gratification for having a good season. Maybe you didn't win a championship or whatever, but you get a chance to go to a good bowl game and have some fun. It's a really good, positive reinforcement for college football players.
"When we had a two-team playoff, if we made a four team playoff, that's going to take away from the bowl games and all the people are going to talk about is the playoff. My issue is not with expanding the playoff, it's the more you expand the playoff, the less important bowl games become. Nobody talks about bowl games now. All they talk about is who's in the playoffs and who are the four teams. That's it."
"You don't even hear about the other games and all that stuff," he said. "That's always been my issue with the playoff is that bowl games sort of get put on the back shelf. If we want to expand the playoffs, that's OK. I don't think you can have bowl games and do that as well. I've always been one that, if we are going to have playoffs, why don't we make the bowl games a part of that."

That plus the glut of bowl games.
Back when there was 10-12 at most, it was a big deal.
Now there's so many they have problems at times finding enough teams with winning records.

I said that same thing when a playoff was suggested, but it's worked out great for Alabama so I'm cool with it.

The way to make the bowls and CFP coexist is to pick the top 4 AFTER the bowls are played. You must win your bowl game at the very least to get in. That will make bowl season interesting again.

And now those same people want to expand the playoffs like it will make a difference in who wins it all. Sorry but making Alabama play an 8th seeded Michigan State isn't going to help

I agree make the playoffs two extra games after bowl games.

He’s right.
The BCS system had its faults, but bowl games are becoming irrelevant.
Second and third tier programs essentially have to produce near perfect seasons to get through the CFP Selection Mafia. The bowl game consolation hardly gives a thumbs up to those teams who are right outside.

I thought we were making the playoffs and bowls relevant? Even with 8 teams and playing them all in one-time bowls, that's not going to save the rest of the bowl season. The thing about self-gratification is that it's never the same, even for teams that have been to multiple playoffs. It can get expected and the hunger for a title doesn't have to be the same from season to season with any legitimate contender. Which makes repeating a real problem.
I use to hate the politics of the old bowl system when nothing was finalized, or remotely fair. The bowl system was broke back then much more so than anyone can break bowl season today. I guess self-gratification is where you find it.

No way. So Bama has to play a conf champ game, bowl game, and then another 2 playoff games? That's too much

How do you pick the teams for the bowls? To fairly seed this you’d want the #1 team to play the lowest seed making a bowl and so on, correct? In other words, you’d have something like Bama playing a team like Florida Atlantic in the Sugar? Seams very strange to me; I don’t think the matchups would be any more compelling in such a system.

I don't know, it seemed to work for Aggie.

He’s been saying this since the creation of the playoff. Not exactly breaking news

Not if you make 10 game conference schedules permanent and quit playing scrubs 2-3 times a year.
Posted on 3/21/21 at 9:35 am to Lemonpuppy
Those 2-3 scrub (at home) pay for all the other losing(money) sports teams to get to play

BCS was superior in every way

And Video killed the radio star... Bound to happen.

I understand that, but those teams don’t have a chance at winning anything important. If they can’t fund their own athletic departments then they need to drop it and move on.
Do small businesses rely on Walmart to write them checks to keep them going?
If you can’t draw 20k fans to your stadium then you shouldn’t have 15 different Nike alternate uniforms and be traveling across the country to play teams you have no chance at beating. Small ball is small ball leave it at that.

You traditionalists have a weird obsession with a broken system. Even the FCS has a proper playoff system but of course the FBS is the one instance where it wouldn't work
