Would’ve been silly for them not to

Good for him, will probably move on to a bigger program in 3 years if he’s successful

Kind of crazy that they were reportedly waffling on whether or not to give him the job, and then up and decided to drop $15 million and five years on him.

I actually thought he deserved the chance, but something about the way this played out reads weird to me.

Pretty obvious that they were flirting with someone who turned them down in the end

Yeah, that might explain it.

Interesting.

He had a decent run at Fresno St
Not so much at UTEP but he wasn't there long enough to see if it would have worked

Coaching in the Big 12 this year wasn't an easy task and he would have been exposed with how strong the conference was this season

He definitely earned it with the play on the court

Were they or was that just media reports? I'm legit curious bc I haven't paid much attention.

I could understand some hesitancy around wanting to hire him though. His overall head coaching record isn't that great - and that's at much smaller schools.

That said, I think after the tourney run, this contract is somewhat fair. Gives him a couple of years to see if he can continue this success at Texas. I wouldn't bet on it, though.

I must be in the minority but I'm not sold. Beard built that team and they had taken on his personality. This guy is not Beard and did not make the in game adjustments needed. I think they will be looking for a new coach in a couple years.

Yes, offering him the day after our season ended so obviously means we were turned down by a top mystery coach.

Yes, that's the question he needs to answer. We'll see. But he's built up more basketball goodwill in the fanbase than we'd had in 15+ years. He's earned the job. If he doesn't perform, he'll be let go like anyone else.

With a five year deal I have to assume he'll be the HC when they join the conference.

Not bad for their 4 option.
I guess after Barnes, Stevens, Billy all turned them down they had no choice at that point.

Good grief, here’s the part where the school that everyone knows gets turned down the most pretends everyone wants to coach for them

Waffling? Weird?

The AD said they would address this when the season ended so it wouldn't be a distraction. It was addressed right after the season ended.

Are you retarded or something?

Another way to have it not be a distraction? Sign him to the deal before the tournament. This guy will be fired in 3 three years. Good old recency bias at work again. Athletic Director Pimp Glasses didn't really want him.
