Reviving an old topic - why doesn't Tennessee have a gymnastics team?

When Oklahoma's team joins the competition next year, the SEC will be adding the best program in the NCAA. Gymnastics is already gaining in popularity around the conference, and schools that have teams (currently 8) are seeing growing attendance.

LSU averaged 12,075 per meet last year, a lot more than their men's basketball team draws to the PMAC. That's paid admission. What's the attendance at Vol rowing meets?

I was up late last night pondering the same question.

Just could not sleep because of it.

This is the lamest flex I’ve ever seen before.

You are aware that Tennessee beat the shite out of LSU last night, right?

I assume the Lady Vols compete in another sport instead. I don’t know.

Most likely this. Schools generally pick and choose which women’s programs they have to fulfill Title IX

Better yet, why doesn't A&M or Texas have gymnastics?

The state of Texas is the mecca for youth gymnastics.

We joke about this, but it's an Olympic sport. Until Title 9, LSU had a program, and it was good. I think it was ranked #4 when they shut it down.

I looked it up, and it was varsity for 16 years, finished Top 10 8 times, finished 2nd twice, and had 3 individual national champs. Armando Vega, the coach, was a 2 time National Coach of the Year.

I mentioned in another thread, LSU's wrestling team was highly ranked when it was killed, too. Had won something like 7 of the last 9 SEC titles.

Having grown up through that period (I remember following sports as early as the late 70's), I honestly can't say Title 9 did anything but harm. Women's basketball was already a thing, I remember La Tech (with Mulkey as point guard), I remember her winning Olympic Gold, etc. Women's gymnastics, I can't say that's changed much. Fall of the USSR is bigger than any improvements we made.
But a number of men's sports have declined. We used to know some of the male gymnasts by name (Kurt Thomas), men's volleyball (Karch Kiraly), etc. Now those sports are dead.

We can row in our rivers...there aren't any freaking alligators to worry about.

Gaining in popularity? Dude, we were packing out Coleman Coliseum back in the early 90’s when I was a student. Welcome to the bandwagon.

Really makes you wonder what's in the water down there for women's sports to be better supported than the actual sports men play.

Ya'll got some estrogen leaking from one of the plants?

I'll bet y'all are probably some rowing motherfrickers once the banjo music starts playing.

They don't want to add another sport in which Alabama would kick their asses every competition.

No excuse. We have rowing, and we've also won multiple national championships in gymnastics.

Technically, Deliverance was shot in Georgia...but I get the gist.
