Guy passes through their town and plays a few gigs around and gets his big break and moves to Los Angeles and never looks back, and then he dies and Florida Gators act like they lost a local icon, does a tribute and whatnot that sounded like exactly what it was, a cobbled together half-assed montage, LSU band plays over it and gators act like someone just threw shite on the Mona Lisa. Gator Nation are a bunch of tools.

He did write a song about the University of Florida, or at least a student. I've heard that "American Girl" was about a UF student who was tripping on LSD and leaped from a window and died. Although it sounds like an urban myth, I've heard it repeated often.

Maybe some big Tom Petty fans on the board can confirm or dispel this story.

What is the deal with hating on Tom Petty? He was born there and formed his band in Gainesville. Left when he was 24 to try and get a record deal in LA. I think he worked at the university for a time period, too. Why wouldn’t Gainesville claim him as their own, guy is a hall of fame rock star.

Where did I say anything negative about Tom Petty? I own every album.

This here is Florida Gators trying to claim him as their own.

Tom Petty didn't give a shite about Gainesville.

As a non uf fan living in the 352 area code... guy is a local legend. Arguing otherwise is silly, and none of it has to do with the school.

Yep. Just like R.E.M. wrote a song about UGA football.

Then imagine my shock you haven't heard this song... I get being named Gainesville may confuse you about whether or not he cared for the town

So true. I saw him in Houston and I clearly remember him saying how much he loved Houston and it was one of his favorite places to play.

Of course a friend of mine said the same thing about a show he did in Charlotte.

Gainesville not even in top 2.

Even more freaky is his show on his Sirius XM station. My dad always listens to Tom Petty Radio and when I ride with him, the station is always playing reruns of the show that he hosted on that station.

Obviously they're reruns because he has been dead for over three years, but it is a bit freaky how the show is played as though he is hosting it live from the Great Beyond.

This a random rant on a Wednesday afternoon.

And yes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have always been a point of pride for Gainesville. There's a whole history with the Heartbreakers and all the talent coming out of area like Don Felder and Bernie Leadon of The Eagles, or Stephen Stills. Think something like 7 or 8 guys who came up in town together are now inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
