we were watching the last hour of the SECN's replay of the 1998 Arkansas-Tennessee game last night. The Mrs inquired and I really couldn't recall.

Was it fairly mutual or was Nutt convinced to leave? (not a flame, yes I recall his last game was a win over then #1 LSU in Tiger Stadium.)

It was the worst of times and yes I'm including the last few years in that opinion.

I don't even want to talk about. Yes, I felt HDN needed to go but so much stupidity transpired during that time.

Nutt got into some interesting situations after having back to back losing seasons. He hired an up and coming high school coach for a set of recruits who he alienated and lost. He had been having an affair with an arkansas media member who harassed our players. He never won the big games except when they didnt matter. And in the end, he just had worn out his welcome as he peaked short of success with the greatest backfield the SEC had seen.

He was close to done until Dmac saved him.

Yep, that backfield keep him going. People remember the last two years but the two years prior he had back to back losing seasons.

As batshit crazy as Nutt was, it's sad to say he was easily a better coach than Bert.

The signs were all there when it was clear UW fans weren't sorry to see Bert go, but too many Arkansas fans were entranced by the shiny Rose Bowls (that he didn't win).

Eh, it wasn't just Arkansas fans. Most of the media thought it was a home run hire.

So true. In Nutt's last two seasons he won 11 SEC games. It took Bert 5 years win that many. Terrible.

I like to think the 2005 home loss to Vanderbilt kick started the demise of Nutt, but he really rebounded in 2006, only to let his ego get in the way and run off Malzahn. Pretty poor decision.

It was rumored to be that he was having an affair but I'm pretty sure she never harrassed anyone. You're thinking of a random fan that knew his wife.

In large part its the same reason that LSU showed Les Miles the door. Fatigue had set in. Nutt's act had gotten stale and Arkansas fans were desperate for a change of pace.

He would be remembered more fondly but for his last two seasons here he burned the fan base to the ground and pissed on the ashes. There was the affair with the lady from the media. There was him running off the Springdale players. There was the whole Gus Malzahn fiasco. There was him conning the administration into giving him a steak and blowjob deal to leave... only to turn right around and sign with our biggest SEC rival.

He wore out his welcome.

EDIT: I should add, to answer your question, by the end of that last season it was very mutual. Both parties were more then willing to part ways.

Arkansas was smart and got rid of him before he could completely burn their program to the ground. We held on to him for too long and it took Freeze and the boosters to get us out of the hole he dug.

It wasn't some random fan -- it was a CLOSE family friend who did it with his blessing.

His ego got the best of him. Couldn't handle anyone else in the program getting any credit. It had to be all about him.

Sometimes you feel like a Nutt. Sometimes you don't.

I just remember it seemed like he (or his agent) was always putting his name out for other jobs from around 2001 through the end of his time at Arkansas.

Jimmy Sexton. Same agent who kept throwing Tuberville's name in for the Arkansas job and did the same dam thing last year with Gus.

Houston Nutt has taken his name out of the that for the so and so job. Seems like I heard that multiple times a year while he was at Arky

Not sure why you included Bert when talking about Nutt. There is like a 5 year span between them. We traded Nutt for Petrino. We got Bert because Bobby couldn't keep his dick to himself and got his arse beat for it.

Watching a Nutt offense should be considered cruel and unusual punishment. He was great at talent eval. If he had let the Gus Bus roll he'd probably still be in F'ville.

I was one of the few Hog fans that didn't really want to see him go. I thought he was a really good fit for us. A true player's coach who could recruit. I understand why he was let go though, a lot of side show bullshite surrounding him.
