It's true. Their up vote down vote system leads to people's comments getting hidden. So if someone doesn't like something they can make it go away and they don't have to look at it, which means others won't see it.
At least here down votes and upvotes have no effect on where your comment is on a page.

3 SEC Championships and 2 National titles later... I'm overwhelmed with grief regarding a last second loss to Auburn. 
If Reddit Aubs want to dwell on a 4 year old walk win then more power to them.
Alabama fans will probably dwell on their own, more recent, walk off win.
It really speaks volumes about both programs and where they are.

Also means garbage comments universally downvoted is still displayed in the order posted, sometimes at the top of the thread.
