Realistic Coaches for Auburn

If I were at Auburn and I was exploring options, this would be my Top 3:
1. Lane Kiffin
Guy can coach. He knows how to coach against Nick Saban. He's an offensive guru who could work wonders with Bo Nix and Tank Billingsly on offense. Seems like "Saban vs. Kiffin" would be an automatic attention-getter for recruits and while Saban would most certainly have the upper hand, you've got to think a guy aged 45 is well suited for eventual success against a man who is now 70. Just recruit well and give it time.
2. Mario Cristobal
Excellent recruiter. Relatively young. Took Oregon to a Top 5 finish last year.
3. Billy Napier
Has turned Louisiana into a Top 20 team this year. Coached under both Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney. Very young at just 41 years of age. Background as a QB coach which is what Auburn needs to help Bo Nix take that next step.
If you can't get any of those 3, then I'd look at Steve Sarkesian or even Sam Pittman. Pittman has done an excellent job at Arkansas in one season and he can recruit OL which seems to be an area Auburn struggles.

I'm interested to see where this goes

And Gus returns to momma.

Replace Lane Kiffin with Matt Campbell and I think you have a realistic list.

Pittman isn't leaving Arkansas. It was his dream job and the only one he would leave UGA for.

Anybody but Gus and negotiate a contract you can move on from should it not work out

I think the only candidate that truly strikes fear into the hearts of Auburn's foes is Kevin Steele.
Steele is an elite recruiter and played a key role in building Alabama's roster once Saban arrived, and turning our defense into the best in the country.
Please don't hire Steele.

Wouldn't that be great? Perfect ending for everyone.

Napier is the only realistic one on that list

Why not Lane? I haven't seen Auburn fans mention Kiffin but I think he'd be the best hire for them.
The problem I would have with Campbell is he has zero SEC ties. He's a young 41 years old, but his only coaching stops have been at Bowling Green, Toledo, and Iowa State.
Sure, Nick Saban didn't have SEC experience when LSU hired him, but he had at least spent a couple years on staff at Ohio State and he had coached four seasons at Michigan State. Those are bigger programs.
If Ames, IA is the closest thing you've seen of Big Time College Football, I think that's a giant red flag.

1. Lane Kiffin
Try again.

I wasn't arguing the quality of the hire, I was arguing the realism of the list

Jimmy Rane's net worth was estimated to be $900 million over a year ago, and imagine what it is now that lumber prices have skyrocketed. You don't need much money if you live in Abbeville, Alabama. I imagine spending $30 million when you're 80 years old and looking for something to do as a small town Billionaire is not out of the question.

I mean this is all great to talk about but it seems rarely do boosters just throw that much money around even if they can afford it.

Auburn isn’t getting Lane or Freeze. Booster money is plentiful but no one can justify paying $35M+ to fire a coach and buy out another coaches’ contract before you even think about offering your new coach a desirable contract. Kiffin will want $6M to leave OM and Freeze will want $5.5M (both over 4 year periods) so you’re spending $60M to get a new coach once you include the new contract. That would be the nuclear option for Auburn.
Even if Gus takes another job, you still have to pay him $10.5M of his $21M contract so you’re still looking at $30M in one year and $50M in four years to hire Kiffin or Freeze.

They should get Joe Brady.

Not sure who down voted, but please explain why you think Cristobal would leave Oregon with his advantages in facilities, Nike money, a PAC schedule and less demanding expectations for a CFP appearance every year.
Or, why you think Kiffin would leave a program he can stay at indefinitely with 8-9 wins a year and beating MSU 2 out of every 3 years indefinitely. Ole Miss is the next step in his coaching rebuild process. AU is an improvement, but carries higher expectations. The risk isn't worth the reward for where he wants to be. He wants a blue blood or major competitor with a ready recruiting base. That is not AU. He isn't leaving Ole Miss to take that on while Saban's machine is still churning.
