Considering this is a topic that rears it's head pretty often- what's the goal? Is it to be the most southern? Myself, I'm pretty content not being the most southern, I'd rather have nuances and such.

The bottom half of Ga would hang with any of them but we are, of course, tremendously watered down in this category by metro ATL where a large portion of the population lives.

In a way, so is Alabama. Huntsville isn't southern at all (mostly transplants), neither is a large portion of Birmingham now. Also, consider the App. Mountain region of GA. While I agree they are more of a hillbilly, I consider that a sub-category of southern.

Uh....no.
Texas east of I-35 is as southern as any place. Texas west of I-35 is "old west."
West Texas was settled after the Civil War by folks from the south that moved out there to grow cotton and raise cattle. Now it is oil, cotton and cattle. It is about as "anti yankee" as anything. West Texas still has dry counties and is very much the cradle of the Bible Belt. There ain't no Yankees or liberals in west Texas.
Dallas, however, seems to suffer the same ills as Atlanta as carpetbaggers infiltrate it. Houston is one of the great Southern Cities.

You're an idiot. West Texas is about as far from ANY form of yankee type. You have no credibility in this discussion from that comment on.

2. South Carolina
3. Alabama
4. Georgia
5. Louisiana
6. Tennessee
7. Arkansas
8. Kentucky
9. Florida
10. Texas
11. Missouri
The parts of Texas that are close to the borders of Ark and LA (eastern 1/3) are southern. Its pretty apparent a lot of folks on here haven't been around the country too much.

In no world is GA above SC in "southernness."
1. First shots of the Civil War - Fort Sumter, SC
2. The Citadel
3. Charleston > Savannah
4. NCAA won't come to Columbia, will go to ATL
5. ...GA has ATL, which is South Harlem.
6. Bojangles > Chic Fil A
7. SC's 2nd biggest school is an AG school, GA's is for nerds who build Iron Man suits.
....the list is infinite.

2. No comment

5. Very True
6. Do you smoke crack?
7. Good way to avoid the SCAR vs. UGA academic argument I suppose
All things considered, 4 out of 7 supports your theory that SC is more southern than GA

The best way is probably to take an obesity ranking in descending order, and I'm not sure I'm completely kidding.

Dude. Please.
Look, Texas is not Southern. That's a fact. We're just Texas. South Texas is heavily influenced by Mexican culture, but it's a blend. West Texas is heavily influenced by a Southwestern culture, but it, too, is a blend. North Texas, Central Texas, East Texas, and the Hill Country all have their own feel. All of them are blends, and none of them are truly Southern, although we are proud to of the Southern influence that can be found in these various cultures. But none of them can be properly called Yankee.
