I don't think UGA's pool is necessarily a groundbreaking design. It is pretty utilitarian, but I do like the high ceiling design. I think what makes the UGA swimming program has always been Bauerle's ability to get Olympic level swimmers to sign on. Well, that just went out the window, so we will see how his top asst does when he takes over the reins. Didn't work out so well in gymnastics.

Mizzou actually paid for their pool using student fees instead of having the athletic department pay for it. Technically the students decided to do this, but it was packaged as a part of one of a couple options, students are dumb, and the students voting to approve of this plan were not the ones who would be paying for it when it was complete several years later so... the athletic department pretty much sponged off the students to cover an olympic sized pool that was only necessary for athletic events.

Yes, but i assume, that like at UGA, students and staff can all use the pool outside the designated practice times. AT least when I was there, the UGA pool had plenty of open swimming hours. UGA's was paid for, along with the whole student rec center by a very generous donation from the Ramsey family.

As someone who had to pay extra fees because the athletic department didn't want to I don't find that a satisfying explanation.
As I've already pointed out there is no need for an olympic sized pool unless you need to have athletic meets. The prior pool there was perfectly functional for the general public and the student body - it just wasn't good enough for the swim teams. They should have had to pay for it instead of referring the fees onto teh students.
This is just one of the many ways in which the price of an education is increased for students when it should not - or at least costs should be better restrained.

If we build something new today I'm sure it would be groundbreaking as you put it. And is Bauerle officially gone? I thought they were still investigating? And by the way, our assistant would be hired at every other program as top dog so don't let the gymnastics thing scare you...

That situation with jack is just weird... dude was coaching uga months before I was born... true sec og lol. Bama's pool isn't that bad. I can assure you no world records have fallen in Mizzou's super structure, yet they have at bama. LSU's pool does suck, I was horrified by it in 95 as a kid. It is better than UNO's pool lol. UF needs a new pool like a champ. The o'dome just needs to go. All pools are a money pit so hopefully you guys will build one the students will enjoy also.

The student fees were minimal and students get full access to the facility. Students even get to swim laps in the team pool whenever they want. The pictures didn't show it but there is also a nice diving pool in the complex separate from the lap pool.
It was a great deal for the students. I was there when it was passed and I was there to enjoy it after it opened. The pool was a small part of the costs. The lazy river, lounge pools, massive weight rooms, new rock climbing wall, more racket ball courts, snack areas, coffee bar, locker rooms, etc. were all part of it and all those things benefited the students. If I had to guess, adding the pool was less than half of the $63million renovation. I'd guess it was around $10-15 million.

A lot of people dont know this because they were trying to keep it a secret at the time in order to keep him from distractions, but Michael Phelps trained at the Mizzou swimming pool for a little while before the Beijing Olympics, where he went on to win his 8 gold medals.

There is a fairly large national swimming meet held at Mizzou's pool every year. I remember phelps swimming in it a few years ago. That is probably where he got familiar enough with it to decide to train there.

Phelps coined the term "fast water" that MizzouRec uses. He liked swimming there because of the design of the pool, but I wasn't aware he lived and trained in Columbia for any significant length of time.
They used to host an Olympic qualifying tournament every year, not sure if they still do. But that entire rec center is fantastic. Students get full access. It's a selling point to incoming freshmen.

Kirsty Coventry, Natalie Coughlin and Michael Phelps have all set world records there. It's kind of a badass pool, if there is such a thing.
I went to Mizzou for 7 yrs total, and the first four years I paid an extra $175 a semester I think for the right to build a pool that most students who went to school from 2001 - 2005 would never enjoy. I did get to use it the last three years I was there and it is pretty fantastic, along with the rest of the rec center, but man they hosed the students from '01 - '05.

The new pool being attached to the rec center actually makes it more usable for students that want to incorporate laps into their workout, as well as being more convenient with parking, locker rooms, etc...but I agree that AD should have covered some of this

Well, I think since he basically was told NOT to do what he did, and then went ahead and did it, then yeah, it is highly likely that you will be hearing about his "retirement" soon enough.

I'm pretty sure that estimate included the entire student center. Because it was being built in the mid 90s it's pretty hard to get an accurate number on the actual natatorium.
