Not 100% he was gone after 2006 no matter what. Very odd he was given a raise and an extension after 2005 when nobody in America wanted him as their coach.

It wasn't about one loss, it was about the complete lack of improvement over a 4 year period. Talk about 2005 if you want to, but that could easily have been 8-4 or even 7-5 as well
It also didn't help that for most of Shula's tenure, the correct answer to the question "when two or more Bama players ride in the same car, who is driving" was the police.
It wasn't just the losing, it was the entire culture of the program.

When your biggest rival leaves you stadium chanting, "Please keep [insert coach's name here]", you know it's time for a change.
He was gone.
He was gone.

Had a discussion with an Auburn fan that said Bama was always getting rid of Shula after 06 no matter what happened and even if Saban wasn't coming. They wanted Rich Rod.
I always thought the loss to Mississippi State is what started the ball rolling on getting rid of Shula.
Anyway, my question is, if Shula doesn't get "Croomed" by MSU, would Bama have even been looking to make a HC change, or was that already in the works?
Just looked back, and after finishing 10-2 in 2005, Shula would have been 7-3 in 2006 if he beats MSU. Only losses in 2OT at a great Arkansas team, respectable loss at National Champ Florida, and 3 point loss at a good Tennessee team.
Even if they still lost the next two to great LSU and Auburn teams, Bama is 7-5, with a possibility at the Peach or Liberty Bowl instead of the Independence.
Just curious if the mood in Tuscaloosa was already that a change was imminent, or if the MSU game was what really started the movement.
TIA
For me, it was the awful record against Auburn and Tennessee.

Shula is a clean cut coach and he did what he was paid to do...run a clean program and get them through probation. He did all that was intended IMO...

Why was that? Results? Personality conflict with administration? Textbook scandal?
He couldn't coach.....

All I remember of that season was watching us lose to MSU and thinking.... "Dammit! Croom could have EASILY been OUR coach instead."
