Yeah, he lied. BFD.

Have you ever been interested in something, decided against it, and then changed your mind?

You are avoiding the question. And your timeline doesn't match up to the facts according to what you are saying.

Wrong. Rich Rod turned bama down on December 9.
Saban made the following comments on December 21, categorically stating in no uncertain terms he had zero interest in going to bama. None.
quote:
So on Thursday, Saban -- who has tried to denounce the story about him potentially going to Alabama numerous times in recent weeks -- again, and adamantly, denied that he's headed back to the college ranks.
"I guess I have to say it," Saban said. "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."
He's bristled at nearly every suggestion about him leaving the Dolphins since.
"I don't know how many times I've got to respond to rumor and innuendo," Saban said. "I have no control over that. I've stated what my intentions are and they really haven't changed, so I don't know what the issue is. And I don't know why people keep asking about it. What they talk about over there is their business. But what's happening here is my business and our business, and that's what we're focused on."
"I don't control what people say," Saban said. "I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here."

I'm not avoiding anything. You just aren't smart enough to figure it out.

Care to explain how he was under that impression when Rich Rod had turned bama down weeks earlier and Mal was up his arse trying to get him to talk to him?
Yeah, I can see how that would give the impression bama had moved on. For sure.

I can't find it, but if you can find a radio archive of the Dan Patirck Show and the Colin Cowherd show from 12/14 & 12/15 of 2006, you'll hear Chris Mortensen say that based on conversations has had with coaches he expects that Saban will be the Bama coach if they don't have a coach in place by the end of the Dolphins season.
I know the dates on this b/c I was with one of the coaches Mort was referring to when the coach took the call. The next day when I was driving and heard Mort make that statement I thought to myself "I know who he's talking about". Find the archive and your entire argument would change.

I remember the time period pretty well myself (as I was living here and it was on sports radio 24/7), but other coaches speculating (as many people were) does not mean that Saban had interest (which he strongly denied having any).
Maybe he did have interest and expressed it to others well before Christmas. That reflects poorly on him however as he STILL denies he had any interest until he met with Moore to this day.
Anyway, it is not really important. He did meet with Moore, he did become bama's coach, and bama is on top now in NCAAF.
Back to work for me...

Shula and Dooley needed more time

Shula was told to get rid of some assistants and he refused. He even stood up Mal Moore on a meeting to discuss which assistants to let go. That was the nail in coffin.

What's ironic is not getting Tebow was the biggest blessing in disguise for Alabama.
Assuming Shula would have somehow convinced Tebow to come to Alabama, it's almost certain he would have single handidly propelled those crummy 6-6 type teams to 9-3, 10-2 type teams for his career, keeping Shula's job.
Saban would have still come back to college but ended up somewhere else.
It's the whole butterfly effect thing. Any thread you pull would have made the chips fall differently.

This is the exact moment that I lost all hope of Shula being Bama's coach for any longer than 3 or 4 years:

Alabama told Saban's Agent BEFORE Saban left LSU, that Alabama would be there to catch him after he failed at the NFL.

I think most people I know were done with him after the Iron Bowl in 2005, i.e. Honked If You Sacked Brodie.
We actually had a decent recruiting class that year so there were a few more people jumping back on the train.
There were several games that year were it was obvious we were never going to get better than what we had in 2005.

I'm not sure either would've gotten much better with time but they do remind me of one another.
