A lot of people (bama fans) really wanted to give him another year. I think he would have gotten it if he had not lost to MSU. He definitely would have if he had beaten AU.
Also, a lot of bama fans wanted Mal Moore fired either along with or instead of Shula as well at the time.

Shula was like 1-11 against the our biggest rivals. Support was waning before that loss, but if he pulls out the MSU and AU games in 2006 then he probably does survive another year, but I could be wrong. He was the king of getting close and blowing it in the 4th quarter.

Shula was a place holder, now had he done really well he'd have been able to stay but he was there to get them through probation. Rich was their primary target before Saban, Rich had agreed then backed out at the last minute they scrambled and landed Saban, not a bad last minute grab.

Shula wasn't going to last much longer even had he not gotten Croomed, lol.

Well word was a lot of the big time boosters and "players" within the university were ready to get the search over with and really made the push for Rich Rod believing Saban was a longshot. They didn't want to wait for the NFL season to end and still be left with no coach. Mal Moore had much more confidence in the Saban idea though and, though never acknowledged, kinda squashed the Rich Rod deal at the last second.

Results? Personality conflict with administration? Textbook scandal?
Results. That's all that matters. They didn't even know about the textbook thing at the time, but it still wouldn't have affected his job. The whole thing wasn't a big deal. Athletes were just able to get books that their teacher recommended but didn't require.

Yeah I wasn't saying it was a big deal. Had kind of forgotten about it until I looked back at the 2006 season and saw that all the wins from 05 and 06 had been vacated.
Was more curious if he was having problems with the administration.

Rich Rod squashed the Rich Rod deal when he said no.

My favorite theory is that Rita heard Finebaum making fun of her hair and then they backed out the next day
That whole deal was just weird.
But if so, God bless him. Whoever pulled the plug is one of my favorite people forever.

No doubt. It was Rich Rod about 24 hours after Bama made the 6 year $12M offer. Not much by today's standards, but a raise from WVU salary even after his raise to get him closer to Bama's offer. The gov of WV also apparently helped talk him into staying during that 24 hour period between when the offer was made and RR said no.
BTW, I remember laughing my dick off when Rich Rod said no and it looked like no one wanted the bama job.
That sure as hell didn't turn out how I expected.

bingo Moore wanted Saban all along and worked a long time to woo him. They had words in the season which I mentioned & Mal knew he had a good shot at landing him because the interest was there.

There are a group of Bama fans who have gone back and rewritten history to make it that Mal Moore squashed the Rich Rod deal b/c Saban told Bama he was coming after the NFL season.
Or maybe it really happened... only a select few really know how it played out, but based on the bozo's Moore hired before Saban, it seems out of character.

I still remember listening to Finebaum the day when it seemed like a done deal. I was all like "frick me" and he was cracking on Rita and playing "Coal Miner's Daughter" coming back from every commercial break. It would've been humorous if it wasn't so depressing. But then it didn't come to pass, and I was all like "frick yea."
I don't think that happened at all. I just think Mal Moore thought there was a better chance of Saban coming than some other powerful folks at the university. I also don't think Rich Rod was ever something Moore was comfortable with.

Afterward, Rich Rod bragged to a national media member about how he got facility upgrades, ect., from the Bama thing. He made it sound like he wasn't coming at all ever, but Finebaum did scare the living crap out of his wife.

Rich Rod most definitely turned down an offer he had in hand. Zero doubt about it and Mal had moved on from Saban, but went back to pursuing after Rich Rod and Spurrier said no.

Shula sucked real bad. Saban said after the TN game that he could make the team a winner and that's when he actually started the "process", Rich Rod was coming, then Finebaum and his laughing hyena made fun of how hot his wife was, she got scared of rednecks and Rod backed off which opened the door again for Saban to split and get the gig.
This is actually really close. I was at the UT game in 2006. I knew - and so did everyone else - that it was over for Shula after that game.
The story goes that Sexton called Mal Moore after the game and said that Saban had interest but he needed to wait until the dolphins season was over before he spoke to Saban about the job. Moore was on board. As time went on, Moore got pressure from the board and some key donors who felt it wasn't going to happen and they were going to lose the signing class. Moore made a play for Rich Rod at that point and had him.
This is where the story is most disputed. Some (connected Bama people) say that Sexton called Moore and asked him WTF he was doing. Moore expressed concern about losing the recruiting class and said they felt they needed a coach in place soon. Sexton told him if we would wait until the Dolphins season was over he'd never have to worry about an effing recruiting class again. Moore called Rich Rod and backed out, but gave Rich Rod the opportunity to save face by saying it was his call. The other side of this story - one that most people not connected with Bama want to believe - is that Rich Rod is the one who actually did back out.
Moore went silent for 3 weeks. Everyone inside knew what he was doing, but he took an absolute beating - as did the program - in the media.
Long story short, Sexton told Moore Saban was a very real possibility after the UT game. Shula's fate was sealed before that phone call ended. However, b/c Moore and Saban didn't actually speak to one another until the Dolphins season ended, impatience almost screwed the whole thing up.

Every report from when it happened is the same. Rich Rod had the offer. Bama expected him to accept. WVU and the Governor of the state helped talk him out of it and into staying.
Rich Rod said no thanks.
Mal Moore issued a statement asking bama fans to please remain patient that it was back to work in the search.

updated 12:26 a.m. ET Dec. 9, 2006TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Spurned again, Alabama is resuming its latest search for a football coach.
This time it was West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez saying no thanks Friday to the program still yearning for a leader to steer it back to the powerhouse days of Bear Bryant.
And worried Alabama fans like student Jennifer Winton were left to wonder: “Who are we going to get now?”
It’s the $12 million question. Rodriguez opted to remain at his alma mater instead of taking the reported six-year, $12 million offer from Alabama that would have nearly doubled his previous deal.
Crimson Tide athletic director Mal Moore tried to reassure the ’Bama faithful.
ESPN:
quote:
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama on Friday, telling his players that he'll be back for his sixth season with the Mountaineers.
A loud applause could be heard from inside the Milan Puskar Center at Mountaineer Field after Rodriguez told his team he would be staying at his alma mater.
"Obviously I'm very excited to stay here and I plan on being here a long time," Rodriguez said later at a news conference. "We've done some pretty good things over the last five years or so. We're not done yet. We're going to continue to grow."
Rodriguez will receive a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season from West Virginia. While other details of the deal were not immediately released, a source with knowledge of the negotiation told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel that Rodriguez took approximately $1.75 million per year to remain in Morgantown. Part of that agreement was a clause to build a new academic center and locker room by a set period of time, otherwise the contract would be voided.
"There weren't many reasons not to go. It's all about the reasons for staying," Rodriguez said. "I'm biased, this is my school. I think it's a great place to raise a family. We've always had a great athletic tradition."
Alabama officials offered the job to Rodriguez on Thursday morning, but the answer didn't come until more than 24 hours later. Alabama reportedly offered Rodriguez a $12 million, six-year contract.

I don't even know why this is really an issue of conversation anymore
Who cares if he turned Alabama down at this point? I don't get why some Alabama fans want to deny it, or why others want to prove it. It was one of the greatest things to ever happen to the program. I was thrilled when I found out he wouldn't be the coach and I didn't care why he wouldn't be. I would've taken a high school coach over him, obviously turning out to get Saban was much better
ETA: For the record, I still think his wife got really scared and had a big part in it. Maybe I just want that to be true though because it always makes me laugh

I know. I just get annoyed at the revisionist history by some bama fans that are still embarrassed by it for whatever reason.
There was no doubt as to what happened at the time and Saban was not even considered a serious candidate. Everyone here laughed at the idea and Saban has said MANY times, including just last month, that he never even considered taking the bama job until he met with Mal. He told Sexton no, he told the Dolphins owner and everyone else he was not even considering it 1 iota. And he even said the same on the Lebatard show last month.
Saban was a dead end and the job was RR's at the time the offer was made.
Moore was desperate after being turned down several times but fortunately for bama and not so much for the rest of the SEC, he hit a walk off home run with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the bottom of the 9th.
