With all talk of how great this years Bama’s O Line was. Where would you rank Dwight Stephenson at Center and John Hannah at Guard?
Versus this years group. College performance only.

Hannah and Stephenson are way above these cats.

These guys perfected the wishbone then perfected the pro game.

Met Hannah and he's a fricking man.

Did Hannah miss a block while he was in school?

Such different eras. Hannah was about 275... which was giant then, but would be undersized l now. He was a great athlete but size speed and SC evolved. Heck ...go back to 1966, one of great Alabama teams, Stabler-Barry, OL averaged 195lbs but that line totally dominated a Nebraska team that outweighed them 50 LBs per man.

With friend of mine white water canoeing on Hurricane creek near Tuscaloosa in about 1972... rounded bend into class 3, and there was Jim Krapht (sp?) and John Hannah in water, canoe upside down. We rescued, I took aft of one canoe with Krapht, my friend took Hannah in other, and we ran rapids till they could safely navigate again. Two biggest guys I’ve ever seen in a canoe.

Watch slow motion vids of John Hannah.

It was violence encapsulated within three feet.

It doesn’t look proportional.

You're talking about not only the 2 best Olinemen in Alabama history, but in NFL history (at their positions).
That's a pretty high bar to set!

Those two are GOAT at their positions. Unfair to compare them.

Bama and New England fans would go to the games and instead of watching the ball would instead watch John "Hog" Hannah blow his man 5 to 10 yards off the LOS. He was quick and strong. The most devastating blocker to put on cleats.

I met and talked to one of the Blackwood brothers of the Miami Killer B's defense several times. He said the entire team would "Oooooh!" and "Aaaaaaaah!" while watching film of Dwight manhandling NFL defensive linemen. He said he was so quick, used leverage and hands so well that was almost unfair sometimes.

(Side note: It was a former Alabama teammate, Marty Lyons, who effectively ended Dwight's career by taking out his knee cut blocking him on an interception return.

Hannah was a great college wrestler, and so was Jim Krapf. The football coaches wouldn't allow the wrestling coach to ever let the 2 wrestle each other. They alternated the heavyweight division at meets.
I've always said that the best thing a lineman (O or D) can do to help their football skills is to wrestle.

Dwight Stephenson and John Hannah are both in the running for best offensive linemen in football history. I never met John Hannah but I was acquainted with his younger brother when I was a student at Alabama. Nice man.

No, I didn't know that's where he got it. Cool story. I lived around Arab for a while, growing up in Huntsville. Both John and Charles were well known.

Normally I would say the players of this era are probably superior to guys from pre-80's but Stephenson and Hannah are gods. These guys dominated in college and in the pro's. Head and shoulders above their nearest competitors and same against smaller field (NFL).
