I would imagine a lot of them died.
After a while they probably stopped putting large villages in places that got utterly wiped out during bad hurricanes.
They weren't mystically in tune with the land... but we do know that Native Americans were more than smart enough to realize "Oh, we need to not do this or we will all die."

Got a text saying the pier at OBA is well under water and the storm surge has reached the garage under the house. Rising quickly.
The house sits low as it is. I’m afraid we will have extreme flooding. This was early this morning as well. I’m sure it’s much higher by now. OOOOF!
