Power 5 Panel's Proposal Is Solid

d1 baseball reports that a five-member Power 5 panel has recommended that the baseball season start the third week in March instead of in the middle of February. Too many games get cancelled now because of cold weather, and northern teams have no choice but to spend a month or more in the South because there's no way they can host in February. Baseball is not a game meant to be played in cold weather.
CWS would take place well into July. I've always thought the Fourth of July should be part of the CWS.

I like it. Attendance for cold February games is hit and miss anyway and while this would really help northern schools, it’d be good for baseball In general. Love the idea of Omaha in July, same month as the All Star game and HR Derby. Regionals and Supers and Hoover in June would be fun with kids out of school

A sensible proposal? DAFUQ!

LOL - Why should an Ole Miss fan care when the CWS is?

It is a very interesting proposal. Initially, I was a bit skeptical, but if Corbin, McDonnell, and Schlossnagle support this proposal, then it's hard to argue against it.
I'm curious as to how much of the month-over-month attendance increase is due to weather versus quality of opponent (i.e. moving into conference play). I would think the increase can be attributed to both.
There will definitely be some very hot games, but I would hope that this could be somewhat offset by more night games, hopefully with a better TV exposure for the sport, especially in this conference.
Player development via summer leagues, especially for those players who make the travel roster, but get little playing time, is one of my primary concerns. Some kids just need at bats / innings to help with development.
Kids who make it to to the CWS will only get about a month off (or a month to play in a summer league) before school starts back.

Arkansas never has a single night game until SEC play starts because it's too cold.

I’m fine with it but it’s going to be hot as satans ballsack in Mississippi & Louisiana if we are hosting regionals and supers.

That's true, but there's no way around hot weather in the South in June and July.

I think you see greater exposure for a segment of the game that badly needs it (and badly needs expansion in the way of coaching positions and scholarships offered) because this would put most games after basketball season; frees up airwaves on ESPN and the SEC Network to feature more contests during the regular season.
Summer League is certainly an issue but the trade off is a lot of northern teams would get to play far more games at home than they traditionally have been able to

Oh for sure and I’m fine with it. I do love the idea of having the CWS during 4th of July. Baseball and 4th of July just go together in my mind

Last year, the SEC proposed that a third paid coach position be created for baseball, but it got turned down. The more exposure the game gets (and moving the season forward to late March would provide that), the more popular it will become. Then, perhaps the need for more schollies and coaches for the game would be in play. Ron Polk fought for this throughout his career, and it needs to come to pass.

No problem with it, but SEC needs to schedule all/most Conference games at night. Classes are done early mid May so school it is not an issue.

That would be doable--Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night once the students are gone. Of course, ESPN will have a say.

from a fan perspective this is great, and no cold games can't be argued with. I can't imagine the players would be thrilled to play even later into summer though.
