Pitino complained about this back in the day.

Smoke and mirrors

#1 He wanted a building with his name on it - man had a massive ego
#2 He wanted an 18K seat venue (when Rupp was 24K seating) and it would have catered to the rich folks. I was asked what the cost when invited to subscribe, and it was the old cost with an added 0 at the end.

It fell apart when it became public (Thank the HL when it was still locally owned) that the venue would be much smaller and the poor folks would be the first to go. That did not sit real well with the EKY folks.

Look at football, the sponsor is now Kroger, a Cincinnati company, so they get huge blocks of seats they may only attend 1 game in the season. The rest get used by folks Kroger wants to entertain who could care less about UK football or UK sports.

The issue with UK basketball and Rupp is that it sits downtown. You can't find a seat in a restaurant or bar a few hours before tipoff.

On campus venue would have even fewer choices and would give UK the monopoly on concessions.

Not true, if you were lucky enough to attend that NIT game in Memorial when Billy Clyde was at UK you were transported for a single game back to the way it used to be before everybody got so greedy. Place was packed and NOBODY (young and old) sat down for the whole game. Half the size of Rupp but 4 times as loud on that day. Since it was the NIT and a quick turnaround, no corporate folks, just actual fans.

Opponent was not great and it was a NIT prelim game but the atmosphere was awesome. Also, the old Big 4 game in the Hoosier Dome was similar. Game was half UK and half IU and no corporate folks. If you went to that game you were a fan and that place was crazy. Been to many Final Fours since but those old Hoosier Dome game had way better atmosphere.

No you don't. I have been to Durham for the UNC vs Duke game and it is a set up. At least UNC has fans that know the game, Duke has east coast kids slumming in the South for college. Go to Durham when it is not a big TV game and that place is as quiet as the Arizona desert.
