Players skipping bowls could cost their coach bonus money

Dana Holgorsen can earn a $50,000 bonus if West Virginia beats Syracuse next week in the Camping World Bowl, a game the Mountaineers will play without star quarterback Will Grier and left tackle Yodny Cajuste
Six coaches who have players sitting out bowl games this year have nearly $400,000 in total bonuses at stake in those games. Arizona State’s Herm Edwards would have earned the largest bonus in the group, $166,667 for winning the Las Vegas Bowl against Fresno State last week. The Sun Devils lost 31-20, playing without star receiver N’Keal Harry. The junior is a possible first-round draft pick who led the team with 73 catches for 1,088 yards and nine touchdowns.
How does a coach convince a player to participate? Unless it is one of the four teams in the play off does it matter?

Respect my decision.
If they played for A&M, they'd be playing. Never once had a player sit out. It just means more.

They are already tremendously wealthy. Not that much money to them.
Mark Stoops made an additional $750K from his last 3 wins of the REGULAR season. Coaches are doing great.

So a player who makes nothing in college should risk their possible payday so their coach who makes millions doesn't lose their meager (relatively) bonus?
I would throw the NY6 in there as well. Other than that...

I can understand their motives. They stand to make millions in the draft. They risk injury in a meaningless bowl game. Easy decision.

If they can't survive in a college bowl game how will they fare in the NFL?

We got lucky that Myles is the type of guy he is. It was devastating watching that Michigan TE blow out his knew whatever year that was.

Assistant coaches are probably the ones who could use bonus bucks.

With Alabama, the assistants get 4% of annual salary if the team plays in the Southeastern Conference championship game, plus 8% to 18% depending on the team’s bowl/CFP outcome.

How much are they getting paid to play in the Bowl?

Those poor coaches....
Say Jaylon Smith went 5th overall, where he was projected, he’d get a fully guaranteed 4-yr, $23.5M deal. Wound up with a 4-yr, $6.5M ($4.5M guar) deal instead.
But who needs 17 million dollars. These coaches need their bonuses.

Wasn't aware they were Professionals yet. How much did they get paid during the minimum time they have to be a student athlete?

Good thing they got a free education from universities that most would love to get the opportunity to attend. Not to mention the contacts that they make as a student athlete playing football beyond high school.

All true. What does that have to do with a student-athlete risking millions of dollars just so a coach can earn a bonus? Has the student athlete not sacrificed enough for the coach already? Could the athlete sit out and just go play in another bowl for another team next year? The coach could

The coach is a professional (they earned that) and the athletes are students. If they want to play professionally, they have to earn that too. A bowl game is part of the commitment that they need to uphold in return for a free ride and the opportunity to play professionally. Lets not forget the gifts and privileges they receive for playing in bowl games.

people still use the "they get a free education" argument?
You can't use that without an alternative for getting to the NFL.
Do you have a problem with projected early-round juniors entering the draft early? Also a bowl game is an extra game at the end of the season. It's not planned or guaranteed.
The "gifts and privileges" comment doesn't even deserve a response, but here you go.
