Seems like the BCS was eons ago and the thought of a playoff was crazy. Now, it seems every year we are either on the side of "Four team playoff is just right." Or we are on the side of "Someone is left out every year."

Some will say an eight team playoff would be plausible, but wouldn't that be too many games? Hell, even six games would be pushing it, because you would still need to rest for the Natty. Regardless of the number someone is left out.

I personally like it the way it is, but six teams would be interesting. At the end of the day, it shouldn't come down to style points.....it comes down to the BEST FOUR TEAMS.

Of course it's still possible but I don't think it will happen any time soon. Eventually it probably will, but I hope they keep it to something like 6 or 8 and not anything retarded like 16 or more.

Keeping the playoffs exclusive is a good thing. Making the playoffs has to be difficult to keep the regular season meaningful. College football has the best regular season in all of sports and the people who want a gigantic playoff seem determined to destroy that just because their shitty 9-3 team can't make an exclusive playoff but could sneak into a 16 team one.

No matter what system you pick, there will be idiots trying to expand it though. Just look at how ridiculously bloated most professional playoffs are, look at the NBA/NHL. And the leagues that aren't bloated (NFL and MLB) there are dullards constantly demanding they expand.

No system will ever stop the complaining and changing the system to try to stop the complaints is a fool's errand.

I think 8 will eventually be the number it is moved too. That is also the max id like it to ever be. But then I believe it will include the champions of the power 5 conferences plus the next best 3. Id also assume that the sec would move to a 9 game schedule at that point too

Per people who have interviewed people in the know there is no consideration at this time to expand. I think they have quoted Bill Hancock on this. And Bill would know.

If they change it down the road it would be 6 but no guarantees that a conference champ gets in. Let's say 5 years from now Nebraska at 9-3 with several ugly losses beats and undefeated OSU team by 1 point on a fluke play. I would not want NU to get in over say an LSU team who was 11-1 and lost to bama at Bama by 1 point.

Last year, the season ended November 25th, and the championship was played January 8th.

You’re telling me they can’t squeeze and extra game in that timeframe? It isn’t like they aren’t practicing that whole time...

The conf championship games were played 12/1 & 12/2. The only game on 12/8 was Army/Navy which deserves its own space. Most schools have finals soon after.

Playoff Expansion will come at the end of this deal. It's only inevitable. The ratings will be too much to turn down

They should go straight to 16 teams.

10 bids go to the schools who make their power 5 conference chanpionship.

The remaining 6 bids are seeded where 1 plays 6, 2 plays 5, 3 plays 4. These games happen the first Saturday in December.

2 weeks later you play a round of 8. Teams are reseeded.

NYE round of 4.

You get the idea.

Conference championships should be Round 1.

They already ARE essentially round one.

Hell every week of the season is a playoff.

Adding more teams does nothing.

If the playoff this year ands up being 2 SEC teams, Notre Dame, and say Ohio State or Clemson, that leaves 3 major conferences out completely.

I've been all for at least 6 teams with conference champions getting automatic bids. Let there be 1 at large for years you have a good Notre Dame or 11-1 team that didn't make the champ game.

The SEC needs to do it first. Add 2 more teams and have a 16 team conference. Create 4 divisions of 4 teams. Add a semi final game before the conference title game. 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3 winners play for the conference.

If every power 5 conference does this then at the end of the year there is essentially a 20 team playoff.

4 team playoffs is stupid. No other league has 45,000 teams and only 4 get to the playoffs. Make it 8 or 16 and get rid of those dumb bowl games. No one cares about the Fruit of the Loom bowl in Fresno.

Make it 6

Give the 1 and 2 seeds a bye as a prize for being the best.

3/6 and 4/5 play each other in the middle of December on the campus of the better seed as a reward for having a better season.

Then the 4 teams left use the current format to finish the playoff.

Would be sweet.

Four is perfectly fine as the committee has been able to find a champion every single year that they have done it.

Agree that 16 teams is the ticket.

First round can be hosted by the higher seeds. After that use the biggest 7 bowl games for the remainder of the games.

Beyond that , keep 10 of the existing bowl games for the next 20 teams outside the top 16. So then you get a reward for having a good team but not quite making the play off.
The bowls could still be around Christmas/New Years like they are currently and obviously not conflicting with the play off games.

That way you still have 36 teams playing in the postseason but you get away from the ridiculous 80 teams in 40 bowls that we currently have. In other words , you have to earn it again like it used to be. Even though you are not in the playoffs, these bowl games would be meaningful again and important to the teams in them.

The other 10 bowl games could be determined by seniority of the games, geographic area, money, Stadium etc.

I think it is a win-win. Ratings would go up and I believe attendance would as well because less games creates more demand for tickets and opportunity for people to watch. Now we are inundated with 3-4 games a day for weeks and weeks. Who cares? Uggghhhh.

Then you're giving those next best 3 a bye, unless they lost their conf championship which means you're letting their loss slide. 16 with 6 at large plus 10 division champs.
