One more try at the idea of three permanent opponents vs. the SEC Network pod's model. As an LSU fan, I would be happy with either.

West
Arkansas: Texas, Ole Miss, Texas A&M
Missouri: Oklahoma, South Carolina, Vanderbilt
Texas: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M
Oklahoma: Texas, Missouri, Alabama

Southwest
LSU: Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M
Mississippi State: Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M
Ole Miss: Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State
Texas A&M: LSU, Texas, Mississippi State

Southeast
Alabama: Auburn, Oklahoma, Tennessee
Auburn: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State
Tennessee: Alabama, Kentucky, Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt: Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee

East
Florida: Georgia, Kentucky, LSU
Georgia: Auburn, Florida, South Carolina
Kentucky: South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
South Carolina: Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri

*3 + 6 model. 9-game schedule.
*Play every SEC team every 2-years. Host every 4-years.

IMO there is no reason to have pods if you aren’t going to play everyone in your pod each year.

Either way, something has to give..

1) 9 game schedule
2) 4 Team Pods
3) Play everyone every 2 years

This doesn’t work to play these 4 games every year:
1) Alabama vs Tennessee
2) Alabama vs Auburn
3) Auburn vs Georgia
4) Georgia vs Florida

Any solution must solve this problem.

As a Texas fan, I really don’t care what schedule the SEC gives us.. but this is a puzzle I want to solve.

I had the same SEC pods system and every school has a permanent opponent in each pod. You play every team in the other pods every 3 years. Not perfect, but works and keeps a lot of important rivalries.

I prefer the 3 perm over the pods. Top 2 teams in CFP play for the ship. I wanna play the other teams in our conference more than once a decade.

Although, I'll take pods any day over divisions.

IMO, the following games MUST be played:
Alabama vs Tennessee
Alabama vs Auburn
Auburn vs Georgia
Georgia vs Florida
Texas vs Texas A&M
LSU vs Ole Miss
Ole Miss vs Miss St
Oklahoma vs Texas

The following games should be played if at all possible:
LSU vs Texas A&M
LSU vs Alabama
LSU vs Florida
Miss St vs Alabama
Texas A&M vs Arkansas
Tennessee vs Kentucky
Florida vs Tennessee

The following would be nice, but not a deal breaker:
Ole Miss vs Vanderbilt
Arkansas vs Mizzou
Arkansas vs LSU
Auburn vs Florida
Oklahoma vs Arkansas
Miss St vs LSU
Miss St vs Auburn
Ole Miss vs Alabama

Games that would just be fun to see every once in a while:
LSU vs Texas
Georgia vs Oklahoma
Alabama vs Oklahoma
Texas A&M vs South Carolina

Well, 3 perm would ensure the games that have to be played.

The 6 rotating means games every other year with the rest.

WHY would a "3 perm rival" be a team in your pod/group? You're going to play them anyways.

Only way for this is pods & perm rivals in other pods.

Alabama: LSU, Tennessee, Auburn

Auburn: Miss St, Alabama, Georgia

Ole Miss: Miss St, LSU, Vanderbilt

LSU: Ole Miss, Alabama, Florida

Miss St: Ole Miss, Auburn, Kentucky

Texas: Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Arkansas

Texas A&M: Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma

Oklahoma: Mizzou, Texas, Texas A&M

Arkansas: Texas, Texas A&M, Mizzou

Florida: LSU, Georgia, South Carolina

Georgia: Florida, Auburn, South Carolina

Tennessee: Alabama, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Vanderbilt: Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss

Kentucky: Tennessee, Mizzou, Miss St

Mizzou: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky

South Carolina: Florida, Georgia, Vanderbilt

Done! Literally the only annual rivalry games lost that anyone cares about are Florida vs Tennessee.and LSU vs A&M. I think we can live with that.

Here is my latest idea.. it needs some work, but it is super simple and hits all the big rivalry games.

Easy 9 Game Schedule
Play 1 game per group below (8) + 1 perm game

Alabama or Auburn
Florida or Georgia
LSU or Tennessee
Texas or Oklahoma
Texas A&M or Arkansas
Missouri or Vanderbilt
Ole Miss or Miss State
Kentucky or South Carolina

+ 1 perm games
Alabama vs Tennessee
Auburn vs Georgia
Texas vs Texas A&M
LSU vs Ole Miss
Oklahoma vs Florida
Arkansas vs Missouri
Kentucky vs Miss State
Vanderbilt vs South Carolina

This bottom group could be played with in order to setup different annual games. The top 2 or 3 definitely don’t change.

Now the tricky part.. what do you do if that game is already on the schedule? you need an OR game..

Alabama vs Tenneseee OR LSU?

Ultimately this comes back to the 3 permanent games.. and the circle continues..

Some are always unhappy when SEC schedules are shuffled. Auburn is probably catered to more than anyone, and yet they will complain the most when it's all said and done.

My only want is that we're not stuck with the toughest schedule. Playing everyone every other year is good enough for me.

As an Arkansas fan, there is no one I want to play more than Texas, but you left that game out altogether. Texas was our biggest game for 75 years before joining the SEC and they're still the opponent I enjoy beating the most.
