Johnny was a Parade All-American and TX HS FB Player of the Year.
His 3-Star ranking is an indictment of the services.

Let's see... #1 recruiting class 5 of last 6 years....BCSNC 3 of last 4 years.....hmmmm...afraid I have to disagree.

But "competing with anyone on a given day" won't win a National Championship!
"There is truth to recruiting but they are not the entire picture. IMHO as long as you are in the top 15-20 you have the talent to compete with anyone on a given day."

It all starts with what happened yesterday. LSU and Alabama kept their tradition of solid foundations going. Ole Miss, I think, caught lightening in a bottle (besides after about 6-8 players their class becomes real average). You will see that the years of great classes will keep Bama and LSU ahead of everyone else in the SECw for the long haul.
No that doesn't mean that aTm won't finsh 2nd next year cause they very well might. I think LSU and Bama continued what they need to do to be the top 2 teams in the west for a long period of time.....however some teams may catch them for a year or so, but LSU and Bama will always be there at least from where I sit.

Nah...ill keep putting stock into it.
Exactly. The 5 star busts and the 3 star superstars are more of the exception rather than the rule which losers cite to make them feel better about recruiting failures. Georgia was a good example this recruiting season. We missed on most of our high-profile in-state recruits. I recognize it and freely admit it. Losing our recruiting coordinator, Rodney Garner, and Grantham's questionable status as our DC, most likely figured greatly into our mediocre recruiting for 2013. BTW, Grantham is supposedly interviewing for the Philadelphia Eagles DC job today.

If LSU had signed the #1 class in America yesterday would you have started this thread?
We signed a really great class, I don't think that would have mattered.

They key to each signing class is not who signs, its who acually makes it into school and stays in school. At Tennessee we have seen our fair share of recruting classes that turned out to be busts.

You can either Richt/Chizik/Miles it and put incredible talent on the field and hope to win that way or you can Spurrier/Petrino it and coach up the 3*'s. Not signing a top 15 class doesn't consign you to mediocrity, but you damn well better have a top flight coach if you want to stay relevant.

The ONLY reason Manziel was ranked as a 3* is his measurables. The kid broke every high school record for offense, and would have been HIGHLY recruited if a little bit bigger
Also, he played at Tivy, where there just aren't too many recruiters out there, as most tend to recruit the more populous areas of the state.

There are plenty of 5 star busts and 2 star superstars.
Future NFL hall of famer Patrick Willis says hi. 2/3-star coming out of high school in TN and couldn't get Phat Phil to even give him a sideways glance.
Ole Miss got lucky as hell with that pickup

Just doesnt make sense how bama, USC, ohio state win with 5 stars and arizona state, Colorado, and baylor lose with 3 stars if getting 5 stars isnt important

I will never understand why Manziel was a three star. He was the NATIONAL HS player of the year according to several and set a ton of records in the state where HS football is bigger than anywhere else. He had nearly 80 total TDs his senior year.
People will say its because of his size, but every year there are multiple short running QBs who receive 4-star ratings.
