for anyone that uses the scout forums someone on the Auburn section said the site is leaking users IP Addresses said a total stranger was able to acquire his IP just by using that forum if you are a member on the scout forums I suggest being cautious with what you post on there

What’s the purpose of them doing that?

The last person I trust to accurately identify how someone obtained his IP is a boomer.

That's been going on over there for a long time.

The problem is admins from one site can see IPs on other team sites when they visit.

And wtf does it mean when you little shot noses say sites are Boomer sites? What I think it means? Us Baby Boomers use those sites?

Give me a break. We we're writing code and and tweaking script before y'all were born ... and we're not stupid.

There's a whole industry built on scamming boomers on the internet and it's probably like a solid quarter of India's GDP. You may not be a technologically illiterate boomer but it's the tendency in that generation.

I'm not super familiar with Scout so you may be right about that problem.

I don't get it. What's the presumed motive and desired outcome here? Doxxing people? Gaining some sort of blackmail material?

Also, I wonder what intentions the person looking up that poster had that convinced the poster it wasn't for nefarious reasons. Is there a pleasant good-willed reason to dig up RL information on a poster who didn't choose to share the information with you? Creepy Valentine's Day flowers sent to your workplace?

If it's run of the mill forum shite it's usually to find pictures or something embarrassing to throw out and shame someone.

Sometimes, and oftentimes on twitter, it's to get them fired.

Rarely it's the crazies trying to find and kill someone.

Someone threatening suicide. That's the common one.

Well, since I don't have any pictures online (that I know of) and I don't use Twitter, I guess I'm just gonna get killed if anyone publishes my IP. Damn. Maybe I better get a Twitter so the odds of me surviving are 50/50.

Your twitter handle is already taken by a half naked woman with a tiddy out. Your reddit name is taken by a teenager who likes to play Magic the gathering. You have an etsy shop that sells watches or some shite.

They have had security problems over there since inception 16 years ago. The problem was that their original CEO was a left coast Washington assclown that thought it was a good idea for all senior admins on each team site to have IP access when on other sites as a way of cross checking trolls and alts from rivals sites ... because he was very anti-alt and trolls. He felt it caused board disruption on team sites and, when caught, that IP would be shackled and limited to the one site it was subscribed-to.

Problem was you had a bunch of assclowns petty senior admins running around stirring up shite and doxxing members out of revenge. And that was going on as far back as 2003-2004.

I doubt that software has changed much since then.

Jim Heckman took his engineers from Rivals with him when he started Scout, which was another woman before that but I can't remember ... but it really went South when he sold out to Fox Sports.

Shannon Terry bought Rivals and immediately set out to fix the same crossover security issues and he hired two or three senior admins for the entire network that served to monitor the entire network ... and that worked when working with designated team site admins.

Those were the board wars days and they were fricking ugly. A lot of shite went on back then that would get you put in jail these days.

Man, this is like "Terminator" all over again. They'll all be dead before the killer reaches me. Then I'll see it on the news, which will give me time to flee.

Edit: Just Googled "randomways twitter" because, well, you painted such a lovely picture with words. I feel safe in saying she's way more whorish than me.

Very interesting stuff, thanks for putting that together. Seems like an incredibly dumb way to engineer that part of the website.

I believe you, early internet, even 2003, was a bit of a Wild West. Genuinely curious as to an example.

Unless you run behind a VPN or Proxy, your IP is public anyways. It’s like a mailing address. They can do little harm if any with it. The worse they can do is DDoS you but I doubt anyone on the Scout forums would have the capability to do that. And all that is overloading your IP with so many requests that it temporarily brings down your services you are running that are public facing. All the admins on this site can see your IP. I would trust some 60 year old Scout user with my IP more than I would some of the haters here lol. But my point is, so what. They got your IP. Unless you have open ports or have been infected with sub7 on your 1998 AST 486 on AOL after being punted off via IM bomb from a Proggie then you ain’t got nothing to worry about. I would be more pissed if they released my cell number.
