4-14 was the record they just showed. This guy looked like a genius at Oregon

Supposedly he’s running a more pro style offense in order to get another NFL job.
Not that he’d have another chance at the NFL with how badly UCLA’s gone.

LSU showed the world ho to beat his offense. That and he got spoiled in the NFL and doesn’t recruit.

His offense was very innovative at the time plus the Pac 12 was meh. The triple option was innovative at one time too..

Rest of the nation adjusted to his once innovative system, and it's not revolutionary anymore. Plus he doesn't like to recruit.

Basically what LMfan said.

He also had an advantage before with very few teams recruiting for a spread.

Chip was a surprisingly mediocre recruiter at Oregon. His classes were never that good relative to his success and Nike money, and Helfrich did a lot of his recruiting. He went to the pros in part because he didn’t want to recruit.

With that being said, his recruiting at UCLA is downright atrocious, even worse than his coaching. Especially with USCw being down.

Kelly is creating a huge hole that’ll be hard for his successor to dig out of. Rebuilding a talented but badly coached team is one thing, but rebuilding a badly recruited team is a lot harder. Ask Urban Meyer.

He ran the shiny new offense everyone is running now before it was cool.

His niche is no longer a niche.

Never liked Recruiting.

He made millions going against the grain and the game caught up.

He has no way of standing out now and he wont put the work in needed to be good.

Hes basically sitting in California cashing a last round of checks till he gets fired.

If he didn’t have to recruit and could just call plays, think he’d do a good job? Asking for a friend.

Top 15 to Top 10 classes depending on which service you look at, also was ahead of the curve with recruiting guys that would do well in a spread.

2009 was mediocre, but that was a transistion year.

He would of gotten crushed in the SEC if FLorida would have offered.

No way would he put the work in to roll in the SEC at a Big 6, would of been a disaster.

I think his classes at Oregon were in the 20s.

Granted that he may have recruited more specialized spread players.

I get what a lot of you posters are saying. He doesn’t like to recruit. But that goes to show you what a dumpster fire program UCLA is. The administration never did their homework to realize that he hates to recruit. And naturally his offense is rather lackluster in this day and age. He doesn’t even try to run his former offense from Oregon. And he doesn’t have the horses to compete. Either way, he’s put himself in the crosshairs because it was all self-inflicted. His days are numbered. This should be interesting to see who throws more money at Meyer. USC or UCLA. Although I’d like to see Mike Leach at one of the LA schools. His ultra conservative belief system in lefty land would create a ton of articles

The LSU loss was unfortunate but he's still got his Gators ranked and in the running.

Jim Mora left that program with very little talent. If Chip can survive 4 years and upgrade the talent he'll win there. Unfortunately in this day and age of instant gratification no one has the patience to allow a coach to build a program.

IDK how Jim Mora recruited, but I’m sure he recruited better than Kelly.

Kelly’s recruiting is beyond atrocious for a team in Los Angeles. If you read the UCLA boards, they’re generally even more upset with his recruiting than his coaching.

Their current class is ranked #76.

Similar to Rich Rod.... at some point their schemes were groundbreaking and Ds were not built to stop them. Not anymore.

He took over a 10-3 team at Oregon that was already running his offense

he took over a 6-7 team ot UCLA that had no one suited for his offense and was jsut generally pretty bad.
