One of Missouri's amazing 1970's wins was on this date in 1978

From 1972 through 1978 Missouri Tigers had some of the wildest highs and lows that any program has ever had. On this date in 1978 Missouri upset defending national champion Notre Dame, 3-0 in South Bend. The win being over former Missouri coach Dan Devine had to make the win even sweeter.

It was a win over Notre Dame in 1972 that "started" their rollercoaster. Nebraska had just plowed Missouri, 62-0.The next week MU went into South Bend and upset ND, 30-26.

Southern Cal,Ohio State, Alabama and Nebraska were just a few top ten road games where Missouri came out ahead.

As for 1978, it was Missouri's 35-31 upset over then #2 Nebraska in Lincoln that had #1 Penn State choose the Sugar Bowl over the Orange Bowl.

Yep. Those were tough teams

We beat Alabama in 1975, a team that would finish 11-1. Oklahoma won the national title that year, a team that also finished 11-1. We managed to lose to OU 28-27 on like a last minute touchdown run. We win that game, and Alabama probably wins the 1975 national title.

We helped Bama out three years later by beating #2 Nebraska, and also losing our game to Alabama in Week 2

Some might attribute ND's loss to arrogance. In that 1978 3-0 loss to MU twice ND went for it on 4th down in the red zone and twice they were stopped. Once from the 11 and the other inches from the goal line. When they did finally try a field goal the snap was bobbled.

All in all ND was inside the MU 25 5 times but through stops and turnovers netted exactly zero points.

Perhaps. Believe it or not some sports enthusiasts enjoy the history and continuum of the game and of programs. Obviously the OP is a very knowledgeable fan of the game considering he is an LSU fan but still can appreciate remarkable occurrences in football history and lore. If you stop to think, at the end of each game it becomes simply a good or bad memory. It's history. The only difference is the interval of time that has passed.

Why I'd even wager you've said a time or two "I can still remember when we beat Clemson back in 2011"

The program was a dick tease. That’s what he’s saying and he’s right.

Sounds like the coach knew going for it was the safer play and not arrogance.

If “Uncle” Al Onofrio could have motivated a team to play every game on the schedule, he’d be a coaching legend.

Alabama 17-0. Missouri 20-0. Then Alabama 21-0

Yes. Onofrio was 1-6 against Kansas. That got him fired. He had as many wins against Alabama as he had against Kansas

Notre Dame Coach Dan Devine said," They (the Tigers) came up with the big play all day on defense, and often on offense, too. I would also like to be critical of myself for not realizing that field goals win football games. We were in field goal range a number of times, but we always went for the yardage, except for that one time late in the game and then our execution was bad."

IDK...sounds like even Devine knew he did not choose wisely Notre Dame Upset by Missouri, 3-0
