On a cold December day in Knoxville, TN the SEC was born

The Southern Conference had gotten too large and unwieldy with 23 teams. So a new conference was formed with 13 members: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane, and Vanderbilt.
Florida's president spoke for the new conference and handled our resignations from the Southern Conference.
One of the first things the newly minted SEC did was lift the ban on game broadcasts. Today, we obviously have all the coverage we can stand but these men were revolutionaries of a sort. They were young (Gen. Neyland was only a Major back then) and had stars in their eyes.
I think the experiment that started at the Andrew Johnson Hotel back in 1932 has done pretty well for itself.

Tulane has more SEC titles than USC, Mizzu and A&M combined.

In fairness, they were pretty badass back in the day.

SC went 3-0 the next year in the Southern Conference, but I think Duke claims the title as they were 4-0 and a better overall record (SC and Duke didn't play each other that year). Still, we should go ahead and claim that one I think.

Thanks. I'm actually surprised at the downvotes. I love learning about our conference history and until now had no idea that the old Andrew Johnson hotel was where we were given life.

I fee like the next line in the title should be "in the ghetto".

Frank was president from the end of one Great War to the beginning of the next with the Jazz Age and Great Depression in between. Amazing how much happened in this great country in such a short relative span of time.
I saw some of his family last month at a funeral and the stories shared by some of the older attendees was pretty special. Was amazed that none of the folks there under 30 cared to listen to any of them and how narrow their grasp of history has become.

I am guessing it it younger folks who are bored by it all.
*sigh*
How are you doing Prof? Seems like I don't see you on here as much.

I'm doing aight. There's just not much to be happy about in Voland these days. I think the happiest I've been was when I found out that Pruitt would be calling the defense! Too many coaching searches has eaten away at me.
(Prior to all this shite 90 percent of my life was spent with Majors and Fulmer).

At least TAMU and SC were in the old SIAA.
Hogs had some shared history from the old SWC days.
Only Missouri had such little prior exposure to SEC sports to joining.

I'm not close to retirement but I have reached the point where another career might be the most viable option. The changes that have taken place over the last decade and a half in academia have made it pretty clear that the future lies elsewhere. I hate it (because I really do love teaching) but there's just not much in the way of a future here.
That has led me to looking around for what might be next.
