Offseason Thread: Is Kirby smarter than a shrimp boat captain?

Kirby Smart has been very successful at Georgia. There's no denying that, and that's not the point of this thread. The point of this thread is to ponder whether Smart gets too much credit.
For comparison, I will use Coach O, who has had roughly the same tenure as head coach (at LSU) as Smart has had. I'm sure there are many stats and examples we could look at, but I find one particular stat to be the most telling: record vs the SEC West.
Let's take a look first at Coach O:
2016: 3-1
2017: 4-2
2018: 4-2
Total: 11-5
Now, Kirby Smart
2016: 1-1
2017: 2-2
2018: 1-2
Total: 4-5
Now some might say, "Hold on! Georgia won the SEC championship in '17 and played against Bama in the '17 NC and the SEC championship '18. It wouldn't be fair to count those." Well let's delve a bit deeper.
Who were Ed O's 5 losses to?
1. Alabama
2. Alabama
3. Alabama
4. Mississippi State
5. Texas A&M
Compare to Kirby's 5 losses against the West.
1. Alabama ('17 NC)
2. Alabama ('18 SECC)
3. Auburn
4. Ole Miss
5. LSU
Sure, coach O hasn't been able to beat Bama, but neither has Smart. Maybe 3rd time's the charm? What about playing at Jordan-Hare this year? Surely, there could be no 40-17 type loss there... again? No, even O took one there last year. Do we give Smart a pass for the 45-14 loss to Ole Miss? Does O get a pass for losing to State?
I don't have the answers to these questions. Draw your own conclusions. And no, I'm not here to prop up Coach O, but one more comparison before I go...

The fake field goal against LSU and the fake punt against Bama showed how Kirby isn't a great coach yet. Dumb arse decisions, and one of them most likely cost them the SEC Championship.
But he is a really good recruiter, if not the best in the SEC.

Glad Orgeron will have that to hang his hat on when he's being run out of town by LSU fans in the next 2 years. Meanwhile Smart will continue to have UGA in the SECCG and playoff hunt.

I think alot will be determined by end of the season. O has done a great job trying to change the culture at LSU and is a big time recruiter. Nevertheless he was hired to beat Bama and win the West.
Georgia roster will be filled with a majority of Kirby's recruits, he needs to get over the hump, it's only so long with Florida reemerging that they will be outright favorites in the East every year despite talent gap.
10 wins should be minimum at places like LSU with a championship run when the cards fall right. 9 wins and +1 a bowl win shouldn't be celebrated.
This should be a defining season for Kirby's Georgia team good or bad.

That is a good point. I think it’s a medley of O being underrated, Kirby being overrated, and the West being 100x better than the East. But just using the eye test, I’d say GA plays better football most of the time. LSU continues to underwhelm on offense year after year. LSU would’ve had 0 chance in that famous shootout against Baker Mayfield. 0.

How can you compare Kirby vrs. the West when we're in the East & only play 1 team (non-Aub.) from the West. You gonna compare Coach O vrs. the East?
