#1 Nick Saban: The king stays the king, man. I mean, this guy is so good that he just won a national title despite not winning his conference for the second time. That's remarkable in and of itself, but then you realize those two national titles constitute only a third of the national titles he's won overall. He's the greatest college football coach of all time, and it's hard to imagine him not finishing at No. 1 in these rankings every year until he retires. 2017 rank:

TEXAS A&M

#4 Jimbo Fisher: If these rankings were based on guaranteed money in your brand new contract, there's no question Jimbo would be at No. 1. I guess the new Aggies coach will have to settle at No. 4 for now. He helped restore the pride to the Florida Stateprogram, winning a national title, but now he's charged with taking an A&M program to the heights its fans have yearned for. And he'll have to do it in the SEC West. 2017 rank:

GEORGIA

#8 Kirby Smart: No coach climbed higher in the rankings this year than Smart, who was at 54 last year because he was 8-5 at Georgia and had no track record. Well, winning the SEC and nearly winning a national title will go a long way to boosting your reputation. Some of us are more convinced than others, however, as Patterson and Palm have Smart ranked fifth, while Barrett Sallee has him at 22. I'm in the middle at 13. 2017 rank: 54 (+46)

#13 Dan Mullen
#14 Gus Malzahn

TENNESSEE

#57 Jeremy Pruitt: We had Butch Jones ranked 52nd in these rankings last season. His replacement begins at 57th. Must be the Saban Shine. 2017 rank: n/a56

?

LSU

#56 Ed Orgeron: Coach O takes a tumble in the rankings after LSU didn't seem to be in any better position under him than it had been under Les Miles. The loss to Troy probably didn't help, either. 2017 rank: 48 (-8)55

?

MISSOURI

#55 Barry Odom: A three-win improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 sees Odom climbing seven spots. 2017 rank: 62 (+7)

I'm sorry but I don't see how there could be any rationalization whatsoever that there are 21 better head coaches out there than kirbs.

Well kirbs is 8th. That means there are 7 in front of him...

You forgot;

Will Muschamp: The Gamecocks improved from six wins to nine in Muschamp's second season, but he doesn't move in our rankings. My guess is that we aren't sure if the team really improved, or it just took advantage of an SEC East that was feeble outside of Georgia. 2017 rank: 37 (even)

Jimbo needs to lose 86 games in a row to reach Ed Orgerons career win %

Which is why Orgeron is ranked so low.

We can always depend on the A&M game to wipe them away.

Then how do you explain a 20 year losing streak to A&M if you always win?

LSU has been playing football for 120 years and they've never once beaten a team with Jimbo Fisher as the HC.

Dan Mullen: He began his final year at Mississippi State ranked 21st and will begin his first year at Florida at 13th. While he doesn't have the overall accomplishments that other coaches in these rankings have to this point, the fact he accomplished what he did at Mississippi State carries quite a bit of weight with the voters. 2017 rank: 21 (+8)

I'm not going to look up the rankings, but did a lot of top coaches retire, or just have shitty seasons last year? How did Mullen move up 8 spots?

He went 8-4, with two blowout road losses and a home loss to a 5-6 team with an interim coach. The highlights of his season were beating LSU, and staying within a TD of Alabama.

Oh, but Florida hired him, so let's move him up 8 spots.
