Nick Saban Presser - Freaks out on media for talking draft + begs players to stay

Since losing the Iron Bowl and LSU game to kill any hope of a playoff, the question about which A1abana players would sit out a next-tier bowl game fueled the December conversation.
The answer came Monday when Nick Saban confirmed cornerback Trevon Diggs and linebacker Terrell Lewis would be the only two who’ll miss the Citrus Bowl for NFL draft purposes.
What was Saban’s advice to those considering such a move?
“Look, I try to get guys to make business decisions about what they’re going to do,” Saban said. “I kind of get it if you’re a high first-round draft pick. The money versus how you can protect yourself and insure yourself may make a business decision that says the risk is not worth the reward of playing in the game.
“But if you’re not in that position, then you have an opportunity to showcase your talents and try to impress people with how you play in the game. That’s pretty much what I told those guys, and it’s their choice. Everybody has to live with sort of the consequences of their decisions, whether they’re good decisions or bad decisions.”
Coach Sabah then ridiculed the media for making predictions/mocks/doing their job.
Kind of strange to see a coach get upset over his players receiving high draft praise...
quote:
“If you guys picked guys -- do you guys actually pick guys in the draft?” Saban asked. “Does the media pick guys!?
Do the guys that put the mock drafts up, do you guys actually have a draft choice!? Do you pick!?”
He said that to make the point that, perhaps, A1abana didn’t have other players who were in the position to be high first-round draft picks after getting grades from 20 NFL teams.
Coach Sabah also hinted at a potential conspiracy against the Crismon Tide...
quote:
“I’m not sure we do have anybody in that position, aight,” Saban said. “I know it’s out there. It’s out there every year. We’ve had guys that they put were going to get drafted in the first round and got drafted in the fifth round."
"So, I don’t think all that information is exactly accurate. I actually think that the NFL teams try to stir the media away from who they’re going to pick and who they like, aight. So, there’s a lot of misinformation out there as to who the guys are.”

Sad is a good word to describe it.
Certainly not a good look.
Seems like Coach Sabah is starting to feel the heat coming from his seat!

I mean he's not totally wrong. How many kids had someone in their ear who just wanted some of their commission or whatever now and encouraged them to join the league when staying could have really increased their draft stock. Malachi Dupre comes to mind. Kid just had it in his head he was NFL ready and probably had people pushing him so he left early, got drafted in the 7th round and has basically been on practice teams or the Arena League since then. Maybe one more year let's him improve into a guy that a team wants to invest in rather than a throwaway pick.

That's not a freak out, and he is absolutely correct.
And I hate that MF.

He's actually not completely right. He said only high 1st round picks should leave early. That's really not right at all. Some guys have maxed out their draft grades. Some have injury concerns that may play themselves out of football if they get hurt again before turning pro. There are plenty of reasons to leave early without a 1st round grade. I do agree that too many players declare early and many of these players need better guidance before making that decision, but Saban is clearly bothered by being in a position of players sitting out bowl games, something he has yet to experience as a coach. That was about as predictable a Saban lash-out as possible.

I don't totally disagree, but if he hasn't improved enough in 3 years with pro coaching to stick in the league, one more year in LSU's shitty offense at the time wasn't going to help him out.
He could've possibly been a higher draft pick and gotten a bit more upfront money, but the end result likely would've been the same.

I was told there was going to be a freak out?

Didn’t Pete Carroll freak when Sanchez left early?

Even taking into account LSU's anemic Les Miles offense, Dupree was one of the more disappointing 5 star recruits we've had. He was also one of those guys that seemingly decided in high school he was playing 3 years of college ball and bouncing, regardless of how he actually performed.
