Saban has a hard time winning these awards because it is generally assumed that Coach of the Year is equivalent to Most Improved Team.

But, all things considered, if he wins the national championship while managing all the COVID distractions, it has to say something positive about his coaching/leadership skills. So I think this is deserved.

He definitely deserved it this season. Now, if only he could win a natty.

If Arik had stayed I imagine he would have been in the running for freshman of the year. Oh well

Agreed. Hopefully he gets his mind right.

Who did win it?

Been the best corner in NCAA all year. Even PFF agrees

quote:

First-Team: Patrick Surtain II, Alabama Surtain may have given up a 50-yard touchdown in the 2020 SEC Championship Game, but that was truly one of the few bad plays he had all season long. He is a physical corner who trails only Hodges-Tomlinson for most forced incompletions among Power 5 outside corners (12). As you may have seen in the 2021 PFF NFL Draft Guide, Surtain’s greatest attribute is his press skills, and this year has verified that. He comes in at No. 1 among all FBS cornerbacks in press-coverage grade.

Did Stingley play well enough before the Alabama game to deserve 1st team All-SEC or was that just a name pick?

A CB responsible for 1 TO all season usually doesn’t get into the mix. Good for them for checking out the advanced stats and what not.
