“If you’re the head coach, there ought to be a better way to do it,” Saban said during his radio show Thursday night. “I don’t know exactly what that is, but there should be a better way to do that. You ought to be able to have some communication with the sidelines just like I have communication with somebody on the field during practice.

“I can’t directly talk to a player, but I can say, ‘Tell 22 that he was supposed to reroute the guy,' or whatever. You can’t have any of that, and that doesn’t seem quite right.”

According to the NCAA’s rules, the only communication can happen from the press box to the field. So if Saban was isolating in a suite in the press box, it’d be no big deal. But since he’s going to be completely off-site, he’s unable to do any real-time coaching. Former USC coach and current Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is the interim coach in Saban’s place.

The rule makes sense. And was obviously written in an era when COVID-19 didn’t exist. If Saban was feeling OK and was dealing with an illness that wasn’t a highly contagious virus, he’d likely be on the sidelines Saturday night.

Instead, he’s following all protocols and will watch the game like most of us.

Nick Saban: It 'doesn't seem quite right' that he can't communicate with team if he's not at game

ETA: Yahoo is framing this at though he won't be at the game, even in isolation. Has that been determined, or are they just speculating here?

Democrats remind me of this quote

Sucks when Draconian measures bite you in the arse right Nick?

I don't believe he is even allowed in the building. Nick's going to burn a hole in his carpet at home with all that pacing during the game

I really don't get the part about having to stop communication 90 minutes before the game

No no, Nick supports the regulations and guidelines that cost other people their complete jobs and way of life. I have seen him on his ads. But now he has a problem with guidelines that simply keep him away from work

A guy that has played for a NC twice without winning his own division is bitching about things being unfair. Grab a tampon.

I agree with Nick these rules are ridiculous

But he had no problem telling others to "do their part. follow the guidelines" over and over again no matter how much those guidelines cost some people in their actual lives

Now that the guidelines cause him a minor inconvenience, he doesnt think its right

What a hypocritical typical self absorbed a-hole

By about the beginning of May, I was almost ready to shoot a pregnant woman every time I heard that phrase in the grocery store.

Exactly. Saban needs to step back and think about why the rule exists. Do we want coaches on the sideline to be able to communicate with people remotely? I get his frustration, but we can't start changing rules that are there for good reason because he happens to be sick right now and can't be at the game.

And if his frustration lies with not being allowed at the stadium when he has COVID, well then he just sounds like a hypocrite, given he was leading the charge telling people to follow the guidelines an be safe.
