Never realized the impact an athlete can have until they pass.

Kobe was hated by many because he was so good. I was one of those people that hated him growing up. As soon as the man retired I realized what the NBA and the world of sports lost. He made it fun. His edge , his tenacity, his killer instinct made the NBA fun.

What a crazy world we live in where you can be here one day and gone the next. I truly respect what he did for the game and don’t think the NBA will ever be the same as when he was out there.

It's strange how being a fan of one player can impact how you feel about another. I was always a Kobe fan and would get so mad when people acted like LeBron was as good or better during his first stint in Cleveland. It just started my "hate" for LeBron. Not a gam of his to this day on the court. LeBron off the court is a different story. Such a good role model.

Yea it is definitely hitting me harder than I would have expected.

Tragic accident but also losing greatness in one’s prime is tough to swallow.

To quote Conan O’Brian, some day all of our graves will go unattended.

We’re here on this planet that’s been here billions of year for just a few decades. Our lives are meaningless to everyone and everything except ourselves, God, our loved ones and the people whose lives were impacted during our brief time here. All except God will be long gone in 60-80 years, and we won’t even be footnotes in earth’s history.

That being said, I am saddened by the news and wish the best for his family and loved ones. RIP Kobe.

The NBA is not something I’m drawn into but obviously he was a fantastic player, one of the very best ever. You have to respect his legacy as a player.

Obviously this is tragic but I’m not crazy about making him, or anyone else, into this God like figure. I saw 5 minutes of Sportscenter and had to turn it off. They made it sound like he was the reason people breathe.

A lot of people aren’t grounded in something like faith, or didn’t have father figures and so they attach themselves to these athletes. I get what you mean, but it’s a really big deal to some people.

His impact went well beyond his NBA career. I don't have an issue with that being highlighted.

First and foremost this is just shitty news but every time a “famous” person dies they’re suddenly put on an even higher pedestal.

So true.
A phrase that’s always resonated with me: “There ain’t no luggage rack on a hearse.”
When it’s our time—nothing else matters.

The bickering and grudge-holding we do is a waste of time.
Be your brother’s keeper; forgive those who’ve wronged you; and make the best of what you have.

Lets be honest. This is done with people every day in all facets of life. Memorials are supposed to be a celebration of life.

As far as it being covered so extensively right now on Sportscenter and ESPN, a lot of these people covered Kobe from the time he started in the league and well after. Many had a personal relationship with the man as a result. Holly Rowe, for example, talked about how he reached out to her over her cancer diagnosis. 2019 Wooden Award winner and Oregon women's BB player, Sabrina Ionescu, openly wept in their pre-game today. She had developed a relationship with Kobe over his interest in women's basketball (going back to his days living overseas) and she was his daughter's favorite player (who also passed in the wreck).

It just goes well beyond just this guy as an NBA player.

Of course.

My comment may have come wrong, I meant no disrespect to him. Just in general my brain can’t process the idea of worshiping another human being that I don’t personally know. I can admire the ability of a great athlete, or a good musician; I can find inspiration in what they do if it relates in anyway to what I do.... but they are every bit as human as we all are. They fart, they make mistakes, all the same.... standing in line for hours to get someone’s autograph for instance is something I can’t comprehend.

Deep admiration and devotion should be devoted to those that have devoted their lives to better ours. Mom and Dad come to mind,
