So State is #24 in NET and #24 in RPI, sounds like the formulas are pretty similiar right? Then you go and look at Auburn who is #21 in NET but #40 in RPI. That’s a huge discrepancy. What does the NET like so much more about Auburn than the RPI?

Auburn is 0-7 vs Q1 Teams in the NET which makes it even more confusing

Auburn's losses are by 6, 7, 15, 2, 3, 8, 5, and 5. They have a bunch of blowout wins. I'd imagine those margins have to play a role.

They also factor when a team takes an L by 10 points or more/compared to winning by 10.

Auburn's SEC wins are by 15, 19, 34, 21, 14 and 11. We're the most jekyll and hyde team ever.

RPI is purely a resume metric - winning percentage, opponent's winning percentage, and the winning percentage of the opponents of your opponents

NET takes into account things like where the game was played, margin of victory, and most controversially offensive and defensive efficiency.

While margin of victory is capped at 10, every possession affects your efficiency. Auburn is good at blowing out teams and not getting blown out, so that helps them greatly. They also only have 2 home losses.

State too high in RPI... What in their record makes them 15-16 spots higher than Auburn? State had a weak preseason record. The NCAA Net takes into account who you played.

Auburn only has 3 wins of 9 points or less, or 18.8% of their wins are by single digits

LSU has 11 wins of 9 points or less, or 52.4% of their wins are by single digits

That helps Auburn in NET in that regard. Auburn has capped out that MOV metric a lot.

State played good OOC this year and cruised through it. Have had some mind numbing losses in conference play

Beating Auburn by 8 maybe one factor. Another maybe that State has 7 more Quality wins than Auburn does.

Mississippi State is 11-7 vs Q1 and Q2 teams in RPI, Auburn is 5-8 vs Q1 and Q2 teams in RPI.

State beat Auburn head to head.

State is 18-7 against the #13 SOS while Auburn is 16-8 against the #35 SOS.

I don’t know what weak preseason record means but if you are talking non connference state went 12-1 and has the #5 non conference RPI.

I think it’s much easier to argue that Auburn’s NET is too high than Auburn’s RPI is too low. I don’t see any reasons why Auburn’s NET should be higher than State’s and I see many reasons why State should be 15-16 spots higher than Auburn. But hey that might just be me.
