NCAA Considering making a fair catch inside the 25 yardline a touchback on kickoffs

This would effectively kill the technique of kicking the ball to the corner just shy of the endzone trying to force the returner to one side of the field and shortening his return hoping your coverage can tackle him before he hits the 25. Essentially the Les Miles tactic at the end of his time at LSU employed under BDP.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee announced it has proposed a new rule that would allow players to call for a fair catch inside their own 25-yard line on kickoffs and have it result in a touchback, giving their team the ball at the 25. "The committee discussed the kickoff play at great length, and we will continue to work to find ways to improve the play," said North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, the chair of the committee. "We believe making one change will allow us to study the effect of this change in terms of player safety."
The potential change, which was made with player safety in mind, will be sent to coaches and conferences for feedback in the coming weeks. It still needs to be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss it -- and other proposed rule changes -- April 13.
Among the other proposals is a tweak to speed up the pace of play. Following touchdowns and kickoffs, a 40-second play clock would go into effect, designed to eliminate what has been considered dead time. "In discussions with the college football community, the committee's goal is to identify ways to keep the game moving and reducing as much as possible the down time in the stadium," Steve Shaw, the secretary-rules editor, said in a statement. "These changes will not take plays out of the game, but will positively impact the flow of the game."
Additionally, the committee has proposed eliminating blocks below the waist more than five yards from the line of scrimmage and requiring that all blocks below the waist, with the exception of those from interior linemen, must be from the front.

terrible rule. If they're going to do this, they might as well just do away with kickoffs entirely.

Let's just take the pads away and give them flags....jesus Christ that's a terrible rule

It'd probably bring the fair catch rating up to 95%, if not higher.

This is a high risk play but they did want to get rid of it so you could do on-side kicksc. (Seemed to help Bama a couple of years ago). so this is a compromise. I like it..

Yeah just get rid of kickoffs if you don't want to have kick returns.

If they want to reduce the injuries and not the excitement on KOs and punts, have a total of 7 players on each side for those plays.

Somehow this is missous fault. I think. Maybe not.

Eliminate the KO and place the ball at the 25 yard line. Would speed the game up.

Would rather see a 10 yard halo rule than this crap.
If coaches would quit using player safety as an excuse to change rules to favor them then they would quit messing with rules.

really? what about all of those commercials? so a 40 second clock and 4 minutes of commercials. we might miss most of the game.

everybody's a bull shiter these days. this statement means NOTHING. it's like when a politician speaks; saying it is all that happens.
there is 100% no chance they will ever interfere with commercials. they start right after the score and last until THEY give the refs the OK to start the game.

have to also give the scoring team a 4th and 10 from their own 40 if they want to try to "onside kick" it

Would it change that much? If a kid can haul it in at the 10 he’s almost always going to take a shot that he can return it past the 25. At least I think he would.
