Most weeks ranked #1 in AP Poll.
These are total weeks at #1 all-time (1936-present).

This list really surprised me.

1. Oklahoma 101 weeks
2. Notre Dame 95 weeks
3. Ohio State 94 weeks
4. USC 90 weeks
5. Nebraska 70 weeks
6. Miami 68 weeks
7. Florida State 60 weeks
8. Alabama 49 weeks
9. Texas 45 weeks
10. Michigan 34 weeks

I expected Michigan to be higher and Oklahoma to be lower. I'm also surprised at Miami and Florida State, considering they didn't have football programs for nearly 30 years into the AP poll era.

Some reason I thought this meant consecutive weeks. I must be tired.

I edited to avoid that confusion.

Nice stats, although 1936-2003 is really all that should count for anything.

Oklahoma's winning streak in the 1950s leads to their massive number. Notre Dame's dominance of the 1930s and 1940s helps them out a lot. The difference in Ohio State and Michigan really stands out to me, considering UM's significant lead in their overall series record. More Big Ten titles too.

The AP poll is still in existence, and Alabama's number reflects the last two weeks. The AP poll may have a place in the new system in 2014.

Miami and Florida State don't really surprise me. From 1986-1992, Miami was ranked #1 for much of the regular season during those years. Heck, I don't think they fell out of the Top 3 a single time during that stretch. And then you have Florida State, who finished in the Top 5 every year for 15 straight years. I'm pretty sure they were ranked #1 quite a few times during that time frame.

It definitely exists, it just doesn't count for anything. It literally means nothing in current college football.

Alabama's recent statistics in this area interest me, as well as scare me. We spent far more time at #1 in 2008 and 2010, than we did in either title year of 2009 and 2011.

That is rather shocking.

They still give out a trophy and it's the oldest poll. When the playoff arrives in 2014, people are going to say the same things about the BCS from 1998-2013.

Sort of flash in the pan programs who had good coaches and benefited from playing in slightly lesser conferences for a while. Things changed for both squads when Miami joined the ACC and when more teams joined the ACC, as far as taking a toll on FSU.

From 1981-1994 Miami finished ranked in the top 10, 11 times. Finished in the top 5, 8 times. Four times finishing #1.

From 1987-2000 Florida St. finished ranked in the top 10, 14 times. Finished in the top 5, 14 times. 2 times finishing #1

And that trophy is meaningless. It means as much as an espn fan poll trophy.

I'm not saying past AP records or champs don't count, it just doesn't now. Coaches, Harris, computers are the only polls that mean anything right now.

re: Most weeks ranked #1 in AP Poll.
2008 - #1 for 4 weeks
2009 - #1 for 3 weeks (including final poll)
2010 - #1 for 6 weeks
2011 - #1 for 1 week (final poll)
2012 - #1 for 3 weeks

Since Saban has been our head coach, we have spent a total of 17 weeks atop the AP Poll.

Not directly, but I guarantee you some voters, especially the lazy ones, give it a look when they're putting together their ballot. That, plus it helps shape the discussion the first 6 weeks. It's still meaningful, if only as a shadow of itself.

Alabama, and possibly Florida State, should start to catch Miami and Nebraska over the next several years. Those top four would take 15 years to catch.

re: Most weeks ranked #1 in AP Poll.
Some interesting tidbits from your list

quote:

2. Notre Dame 95 weeks

Since the 1993 season, they only have one top 10 AP poll finish. #9 in 2005. Only finishing ranked 7 times since the 1993 season as well.

quote:

5. Nebraska 70 weeks

Since 2000, Nebraska teams who finished ranked, have a combined record of 68-23. Average of 9 wins and just over 3 losses a season.

quote:

6. Miami 68 weeks

Has only finished ranked 5 times since their last title.

quote:

10. Michigan 34 weeks

Have only finished #1 in the AP polls 2 times. Only two top 5 finishes since 1992, and only 5 top 5 finishes since 1980 season.
