and would it be 1998 Tennessee? And where does that Vols squad rank with the other SEC national title squads? Also, is it the best Tennessee team of all time?

It may be recency bias, but no one expected Ed Orgeron to be able win any sort of championship other than some LSU fans.

07 LSU was pretty unlikely but 2010 Auburn is the answer.

Tennessee had been loaded throughout the mid 1990s. I don’t see it as surprising. Maybe more surprising they didn’t play Nebraska closer in 1997 when they had a shot at the title.

It’s certainly the most accomplished, but there have been better and more talented teams that couldn’t seem to win the big game.

But after Michigan beat WASU in the Rose Bowl, they didn’t have a shot at the title.

It was unexpected in the sense that most people thought if it happened that it would have happened with Peyton instead of Tee, but not unexpected for that time frame. Those 90s UT squads were loaded and were in the hunt most of that decade.

Not sure I'd call it the best UT team of all time, but it's up there. They had some lucky bounces go their way. There's probably an argument to be made that some of their more talented teams caught some bad breaks.

Judging by this board it’s easily 2019 LSU

1998 capped off a 4 year run where Tennessee went 45-5. Not sure it would even be close to the most surprising or unexpected national title an SEC team has had,

Clearly in this scenario, Washington State wins. But regardless, I don’t think most expected Nebraska to put that kind of beat down on UT.

1998 Tennessee is kinda underrated.

Sure, they won a few close games that ultimately decided their season, but that’s what separates championship teams from good teams.

I’m pretty sure no one expected Auburn to have the kind of season they had in 2010 (and almost 2013).

And lost. Haven't been back since. Haven't even been close. That title was 10 years ago. Yes he's correct, it was a fluke luck flash in the pan.

Yeah. 2013 Auburn has to be up there. While they didn’t win it all, they went from 0-8 in the conference in 2012 to conference champions in 2013. Still hard to understand.

Gotta be Auburn. Cam wasn't "CAM" before that season started. And he carried that team to glory.

I hate that bastard.

Auburn or 07 LSU. The rest were pretty much loaded teams and people saw it coming.
