I think when it comes to TV viewership both Alabama and Auburn benefit from each other’s fanbases due to the intensity of the rivalry. I freely admit that I watch at least some of most of their games on the off chance I get to see them lose. I would imagine most Bama fans do the same, and I’d also imagine the same situation exists in reverse. I’d be interested to see if there is a noticeable drop in the ratings for each program on days when their games are played at the same time.

ther games that have outdrawn aggy-Lamar at 142,000 viewers:

Florida vs. Tennessee-Martin (ESPNU, 364,000)

Iowa State vs. Univ. of Northern Iowa (FS1, 493,000)

Old Dominion vs. Va Tech (ESPNU, 201,000)

South Dakota State vs. Minnesota (FS1, 392,000)

Which are all probably ahead in viewership compared to the Longhorn Network.

The number of viewers comprising the 3.6 rating in the Atlanta market would greatly outnumber that of the 7.4 rating in the Birmingham market if that’s the case.

Those ABC/ESPN numbers are somewhat skewed because it includes the ABC games which never feature SEC games. It causes Michigan and Ohio to have inflated numbers since they both basically play in ABC every single week.

If you look at just ESPN's ratings (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU), it provides a more accurate reading because there is more diversity on those networks.

Back in 2014, ESPN listed their Top 25 Television markets based on ratings. Birmingham was of course #1 by a wide margin. Here the the markets at the Top:

1. Birmingham- 9.2
2. New Orleans- 4.2
3. Greenville- 4.1
3. Knoxville- 4.1
5. Atlanta- 3.8
5. Memphis- 3.8
7. Jacksonville- 3.5
8. Oklahoma City- 3.4
9. Tulsa- 3.1
10. Nashville- 2.9
10. Columbus- 2.9

If you take these average ratings and compare it to the total number of households in each market, here are the total average viewing households per CFB Telecast on a metered ESPN Network in 2014:

1. Atlanta- 88,712
2. Birmingham- 65,337
3. Phoenix- 38,522
4. Tampa- 38,274
5. Orlando- 35,351
6. Greenville- 34,523
7. Charlotte- 30,005
8. Nashville- 29,082
9. Portland- 27,698
10. New Orleans- 26,928
11. Columbus- 26,493
12. Raleigh- 24,990
13. Memphis- 24,835
14. Oklahoma City- 23,953
15. Salt Lake City- 23,332
16. Jacksonville- 23,087
17. Knoxville- 21,123
18. W. Palm Beach- 18,953
19. Austin- 18,953
20. Louisville- 17,736
21. Las Vegas- 17,252
22. Tulsa- 16,436
23. Norfolk- 16,431
24. Greensboro- 15,848
25. Richmond- 14,266
26. Dayton- 10.739

***Unfortunately, ESPN doesn't keep going down the list to tell us the ratings in other markets that aren't as into CFB. For instance, NYC or LA.... or even Dallas and Houston.

Dallas had a 2.0 rating during the 2013 season, but did not make that Top 25 markets in 2014. The #25 market in 2014 had a 2.1 rating.

So let's just assume Dallas again had a 2.0 rating.... that would be enough to put them up to 52,074 viewing households..... enough to easily secure the #3 spot behind Atlanta and Birmingham.

In all actuality, in terms of shear # of households watching the average ESPN televised CFB game, Atlanta is likely #1.... Birmingham is likely #2.... and Dallas is probably #3 followed by Houston, Phoenix, Tampa, Orlando and possibly markets like New York City, Chicago, etc. which are just so large.

I’m pretty sure this is by percentage, or per capita. The number of viewers comprising the 3.6 rating in the Atlanta market would greatly outnumber that of the 7.4 rating in the Birmingham market if that’s the case.

Probably not that big of a difference, otherwise Bama wouldn't pull in the numbers they do.

Hardly... bama is like Mayweather... People only watch in hopes they lose.

Not really. Last year Bama vs Arkansas State outdrew some SEC vs SEC games including A&M vs. Arkansas.

Arkansas State was probably a 4 TD dog.

Apparently Bama fans watch Auburn and vise versa.

Most popular SEC programs for Television Viewership (2013-2019): 1. Alabama- 1.000 2. Auburn- 0.962 3. Texas A&M- 0.846 4. Georgia- 0.805 5. Florida- 0.756 6. LSU- 0.748 7. S. Carolina- 0.718 8. Miss St.- 0.700 9. Arkansas- 0.699 10. Ole Miss- 0.695 11. Tennessee- 0.681 12. Kentucky- 0.678 13. Missouri- 0.578 14. Vanderbilt- 0.436 The rankings came out similar to what I thought. The Big 5 (discounting Tennessee) along with Texas A&M are the Top 6. The Aggies have such a large alumni base and fan base along with being in such a massively populated state, they produce good ratings. I'm not shocked that Auburn was #2 but I am surprised at how closely behind they are to Alabama. Auburn is only fractionally less popular to watch on TV than Alabama.... that is surprising. How come Florida doesn't produce good television ratings? My guess is because their offense post-Tebow has been flat out boring. National viewers just don't want to watch the Gators. The same goes for LSU. Their offense has stepped it up this season, but from a national perspective, LSU just isn't that popular.

Missouri situation was the bad exposure that included the protest and the change of head coach that was not well known to now banned bowl game this year that had nothing to do with current coaching staffs and players. The players that was involved cheating were kicked off team. So far this year Missouri is playing a lot better and have been slowly improving each year since Odom been the head coach. So give Missouri 2 more years and should be a lot better. Fans are slowly coming back to go to the games and watching on T.V.. Give Missouri credit for sticking with Odom and getting things turned around at the school and on the football field. Missouri is on the upswing right now. Looking good for the future.

As you can see, there must be some statistical anomaly that puts AU as close behind Bama as you report. Frankly, AU is not close to Alabama in interest.

I'm surprised that LSU is not more viewed - edit: now I see the Alabama/LSU game is not included because they always play at night. If you remove the Bama/AU game AU's numbers would drop precipitously.

AU's close games vs Bama and the perceived/real potential for a Bama loss is the primary reason Bama/AU has a high viewership. No non-Bama game involving AU is in the top 19. The top 18 games all involve Alabama.

So, your average showing AU close to Alabama is very misleading. It also includes many "off brand" games that are shown vs none for AU which drags Bama's avg down.

Most of the SEC's greatest draws are when someone plays Bama close or fans believe there is potential for that.

Well obviously Bama is out front.... they've played as one of the teams in the 17 most watched SEC vs. SEC matchups since 2013.

However, Auburn is a clear #2 and its not only because of the Iron Bowl.

Again, if you remove Alabama from the equation and only look at other games.... Of the Top 15 games not involving Alabama, 7 involved Auburn and just 4 involved LSU. So LSU producing such low ratings has nothing to do with removing the LSU-Alabama game. If you also remove the Iron Bowl, Auburn still has nearly double the amount of highly rated games.

I do think part of the equation is the unbelievably high ratings coming out of the Birmingham market. The fact of the matter is, Alabama and Auburn fans both religiously watch each other's games in hopes their rival will lose.
