This afternoon, I watched "College Football Live" on ESPN...they talked about how much college football has changed, most notably in recruiting.

They mentioned LSU's new football facility. The host, from SEC Network, asked the two former college football stars who regularly guest on ESPN, what has changed the most about college football today. They both said, "recruiting".

One said he chose his school based on his being a lifetime fan of the school and such. The other player stated he chose his due to--get this--the colors and design of the uniforms, helmets, and facilities.

Very interesting, that last guy, especially in light of so many schools refurbishing or building brand new facilities today in order to attract the best recruits.

This is why Kirby Smart has the attitude he does about moving the Georgia-Florida game from Jax. I love tradition, but times have changed. I find myself being persuaded to move it, albeit the pain to see the change if it happens.

Here's an article that appeared today. I've highlighted certain parts in bold italics.

Per AJC:

***********

HOOVER, Ala. — Kirby Smart knows all about the pageantry of the Georgia-Florida game being played annually in Jacksonville, Fla.

But Smart, a former All-SEC safety with the Bulldogs who understands the rivalry better than anyone, said feelings can’t get in the way of what’s best for the program.

“I don’t get caught up in the emotion of this decision or that decision,” Smart said. “I look at it from a perspective of 10,000 feet where I say: What is best for our program? And it’s that simple. And we’ll make that decision as a group and go with it.”

Smart explained at SEC Media Days the consideration of moving the Georgia-Florida game from Florida to a home-and-home series is a matter of quality control.

“I think anytime you look at things from self-analysis, you say let’s do quality control,” Smart said. “How can we get better, how can we grow, how do we improve?
“How do we improve at recruiting? Getting opportunities to present, to put your best foot forward, to have people into your home.”

UGA is in the design and development phase for the expansion of the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall football building.

The project is expected to give the Bulldogs some of the best, if not the best, football facilities in the nation and will cost tens of millions of dollars.

Georgia completed an impressive Sanford Stadium West End Zone expansion last summer.

“So you build a $63 million facility at your home location and you want to develop relationships with kids,” Smart said, referring to the stadium improvement.
“Every opportunity you miss to have a kid at your home is an opportunity to get better.

The contract for the game to be played in Jacksonville, Fla., runs through 2021, and it has touched a nerve with select fans who enjoy a tradition that dates back to 1933.

Much has changed in college football since then. Most notably, how programs go about recruiting and the importance of official visit weekends on campus with the accelerated recruiting calendar is much different.

Some fans and even a couple of analysts suggested Smart doesn’t need the 12.5-percent boost in recruiting that another home recruiting weekend every other year would give him.

Georgia’s recruiting classes under Smart have ranked No. 2 in 2019, No. 1 in 2018, No. 3 in 2017 and No. 6 in 2016.

But Smart said it’s flawed logic to think that means the program is doing enough.

“We don’t look at things from the scope of, well we had the No. 3 or No. 2 or No. 6 or No. 10 recruiting class, that doesn’t matter,” Smart said.

“We’re trying to figure out how to get better, and the best way to get better is to have opportunities to present in front of those kids.”

Smart was the No. 6 highest-paid coach in the nation in 2018, according to USA Today data, but Georgia finished No. 8 in the final Coaches Poll after finishing last season with consecutive losses.

Smart explained how that has triggered a “Do More” philosophy with him, his staff and his players.
Part of doing more, Smart believes, is maximizing the program in every capacity.

“I’m for what’s best for the University of Georgia and as a group and as a staff and as administration,” Smart said in Hoover, “and we’ll look at that internally and make the decisions based on what is best for our student-athletes and what is best for the university.”

The financial portion of the equation is that Georgia essentially is making an extra $1.65 million per year by playing the Gators in Florida every year.

A home game at Sanford Stadium nets about $4 million, and then the team loses approximately $500,000 for a road game — a profit of $3.5 million over two years.

Jacksonville pays UGA $3.4 million per year to play Florida, a net of $6.8 million over two years — hence the $3.3 million difference over a two-year period.

The soonest the Florida game could be in Athens would be 2022 if the Jacksonville contract is not renewed.

It would be a travesty if that game is moved. I don’t think it would be the same if it was played in Athens and Gainesville.

They just need to go ahead and make it official so the media can move on to something else.

At 32 years old, I’ve now experienced multiple changes in leadership at both the company I work at and inside Arkansas athletic department. The trend I’ve seen is the new top dogs feel like they have to justify their existence and the amount they’re paid by saying this or that needs to change for “optimization.” To hell with history, tradition, and risks with change, let the guy who’s been here a year make big changes just so he can leave in a few years and the next big dog can come in and tell us what changes HE wants to see

Just once I want to see a CEO or AD come in and say, “You know what, y’all keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll stay out of the way. Our profits are great, our facilities are great, our traditions are great. I’m just one guy who has the privilege to man this ship for this moment in time.

If you move the game to a home and home, it's a regular rivalry game atmosphere.
In Jacksonville it's an event. People from both sides pack that place, and it's an awesome spectacle.
frick Kirby Smart.

Why doesn't Tennessee fill the void and play them in Gainesville every year? It would be great fun for you, and UGA would get the recruiting advantage of an extra home game.

Get rid of Georgia Tech, and start playing actual SEC members and you and Florida can play in Norway.

No one cares about that series.

It has been historically irrelevant for a very long time.

Kirby is just feeding the media.

Georgia shows videos to recruiting highlighting Jacksonville. Their video ends with them driving over the Matthews bridge for frick sake.

This game is not moving.

It's definitely moving to home and home. Smart has already made that pretty clear. If McGarity disagrees, he'll lose his job. Fans will take about 10 seconds to get over it. When the SEC gets around to a 9 game schedule, GT will get the axe too.

Will Kirby still be Georgia's coach in 3 years after he tanks with some great recruiting classes just like Richt?

Or do they hold on to him forever with mediocrity as the norm?

Georgia fans will never learn.

I don't what that theory has to do with Jacksonville. The game will move and it won't move back when Kirby's gone, whether that's soon or not.

The problem , that affects recruiting is not really the fact that you miss a recruiting date because of the game in Jax. It’s that the Auburn game was moved. UGA used to always have either Auburn or GT at home in November. That’s no longer the case not only did one get moved out of November but both games are either at home or away. Pair that with UT is also away the same years and the WLOCP, it causes a recruiting issue in Odd years. But what’s worse is it would be worse in the ODD years if it goes on campus; because UGA is technically the away team in ODD years... so not only would you be giving up a great rivalry tradition; and possibly the guaranteed 3:30 CBS slot... but every other year your 4 biggest rivals would be played on the road and you have no recruiting edge... granted in Even years that flips; but your affecting every other recruiting class.

Financially it makes more since to move the Auburn game back to home in ODD years and leave the WLOCP alone.

frick moving the game and frick Kirby Smart for trying to ruin one of the last unique traditions in college football because he wants one more home game for recruiting.

Nah, that'd be awful.

Only change I'd find acceptable that I've seen is throw in one home-and-home every decade with the other eight games being in Jax.

I mean in JAX it's more of a event. A home and home series may rise the intensity though. It kind of resembles how they tried to make Jackson State and Southern play in New Orleans. It was packed of course but the home and home series set it off the charts. This may be good.
