I’m surprised you all don’t make a stronger claim for the 1960 national title like 1964 Arkansas and 1960 Ole Miss does. I know those two received certain selectors for those years, but Missouri was screwed the most of the 1960 teams with a beef.

I claim the 1960 National Title on behalf of Missouri.

Yeah Missouri wtf? Y’all don’t care about a national title claim 60 years ago?

because we don't want to make Ole Miss cry.
also there was no national title in 1960

The reason is, probably, because Ole Miss was unbeaten (as was Missouri) and the Rebels were the consensus national champions. Minnesota was chosen national champions by the AP and UPI wire services; however, Minnesota finished with two losses. Missouri had only one selector voting for them.
Although still opinion-chosen (as all champions were), Ole Miss is more regarded as the national champions for 1960 as they finished 10-0-1 and had the majority of all the selectors.
Ole Miss claims this as one of their titles. Missouri doesn't.

Technically Minnesota was crowned the national champion with 1 loss prior to the loss in the Rose Bowl. It didn’t look as bad as it does now knowing Ole Miss was unbeaten and Missouri later was recognized with a win over Kansas to be 11-0.
Ole Miss wasn’t given the AP or UPI I guess to the state not being segregated at the time? I’ve heard that notion before. Not sure if that is truth. It wouldn’t make sense considering they had been #1 in the polls during the season.

I am a fan of Missouri. How could I not be? They were the best team on our schedule last year.

Minnesota was crowned the AP champion BEFORE the Rose Bowl because it was their policy to choose champions before bowl games. On the other hand, the UPI chose their champions AFTER bowl games. In the late 1960's, the AP changed their policy to reflect the UPI policy of choosing a champion after bowl games.
Ole Miss is more widely accepted as the 1960 champion...they were chosen by 7 selectors, Minnesota by 4, Missouri by 1, and Iowa by 4.
Therefore, Ole Miss is the CONSENSUS champion. However, Missouri, Minnesota, and Iowa can all lay claim to the title if their athletic departments want to because the NCAA recognizes all of them in their official records. If they don't want to claim them, that's their business.

Consensus means nothing if not receiving the AP or UPI. Oklahoma was on major probation in 1974: no TV and no bowl. They received very few selectors whereas USC received the majority. Thing is, OU was crowned by the AP. USC was given UPI.

All I can say is that I'm glad college football woke up and the process of picking a champion is way different lol
