Why though?

We're forced by our idiotic legislature and college board to do business this way.

With maximum 4 year contracts we have to keep extending as soon as we can so that no one can say "see, Coach X only has 3 years left on his contract. He's basically gone"

This way does , usually, save the Miss'ippi schools from ridiculous buyouts when we need to fire a coach. Unless it's Ole Miss paying Houston Nutt a lot of $ to turn them into the NCAA

Isn't it Mississippi that has some kind of rule about state employees and contracts no longer than 4 years? Would guess this has more to do with that if I'm recalling the limits there correctly. Having a head coach with less than 3 years guaranteed in the future is not typically going to help out with recruiting.

That's the answer. Mississippi schools can only sign 4 year deals as a max. We negotiate extensions every off season unless one side is dissatisfied.

All this deal means is that Moorhead is not on the hot seat.

How long was his initial contract? Is this just 1 extra year and a slight salary bump?

State law limits contracts to 4 years. Most head coaches get an extension and it's basically a rolling 4 year contract. Andy Kennedy is the last HC not to get an extension and was soon gone. It's not a good sign when they don't roll it but it typically need that 4th year not to impede recruiting. Regardless how anyone feels about him, he needs 4 years to give him his (and our) best chance for success. I'm fine with it. If it doesn't work out, it's on the Bulldog Club to buy him out.

I've never understood why'd you give a raise/extension to a mediocre coach no one is going after. Lsu did the same thing.

Who the hell is coming after O & Moorhead?

A&M didn't extend Jimbo's contract so they must not have faith in him. And no one is going after Jimbo. Not looking good for A&M football.

Little disappointed in the amount. He won 8 games should have given him a bigger raise... we gave Dan Mullen a raise after winning 5 games 6 years into his season and it was more than 3.2 million.

He raped OM. No doubt about it. Took the money, half-assed the HC position, worked a giant buyout and then squealed on the rebs like a petulant bitch.

I used to like him, too

Auburn: where 8-5 means you're on the hot seat

Mississippi State: where 8-5 means an extension and a raise
